Millstone Traditions and a Visit to the Mine

Lugnås kyrka was built from sandstone blocks in the early Middle Ages. Lugnåsberget is also closely shaped by the history of stone quarrying: a millstone industry operated there from 1147 to 1918. Qvarnstensgruvan offers guided tours inside the mine. It first opened to visitors and tourists in 1933—a historical milestone distinct from the guided tours offered today.

Qvarnstensgruvan includes a museum and a small café. The museum has small exhibitions about working life, geology and bats. The café serves homemade cinnamon rolls, waffles, coffee and local ice cream. A visit therefore focuses both on the history of millstones and on insights into working life and geology. From the Qvarnstensgruvan car park, it is a 700-metre walk along a path through a leafy sheep pasture to the mine.

Hiking Trails with Different Themes

If you want to explore not only the landscape but also its history, the Stenhuggarstigen is a good choice. The trail is about 6 kilometres long and passes through varied natural and cultural landscapes. Signs along the route provide information about old quarries, village squares and geology, as well as local plant and animal life. These themes give the trail a strong connection to the area's history and nature.

The Kvarnstensvandringen is a different kind of hike: this ten-kilometre route across Lugnåsberget takes place every year in May. The Biosfärleden also crosses the mountain: its seventh stage ends at Lugnås kyrka after the ascent. If you plan to hike this stage, check the latest route conditions. The Lugnås Geologiska Vandring lets you visit three geological information points starting from the church car park.

The Pilgrimsleden also passes through Lugnåsberget on its route between Mariestad and Kinnekulle, in the surrounding area of the destination.

Lugnåsberget and Protected Nature

Lugnåsberget is Västergötland's smallest table mountain and offers wide-ranging views of Kinnekulle, Billingen and Lake Vänern. In the surrounding area of the destination, Lugnåsberget is part of Platåbergens Geopark, Sweden's first UNESCO Global Geopark, designated together with 14 other table mountains in Västergötland. Geological and landscape features thus meet the history of the millstone industry on the mountain.

Two nature reserves are also described by their locations. Klosterängen is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The area lies on the western side of Lugnåsberget, about one kilometre north of Lugnås kyrka. The Lugnås gamla byäng nature reserve is near the summit, just southwest of the church. It is covered by species-rich deciduous and coniferous forest with high nature conservation value. Oak is the most common tree species there; maple, lime and ash are also found. Nature and geology therefore complement the cultural-history sites that shape Lugnås and Lugnåsberget.
