Explore Lerum through several distinct interests: the Lerådalen nature reserve, Lake Aspen and its swimming area, visitor gardens and cultural attractions in the centre. Nature, water, landscaped gardens and historic places all come together here. When choosing accommodation, it may help to consider which of these will shape your trip: a natural landscape, a swimming spot, a walking route, or art and local architectural history.

River and ravine landscape in Lerådalen

Lerådalen Nature Reserve is Lerum’s first municipal nature reserve. It lies in open agricultural land between Lerum and Stenkullen. The valley of the Lerån river shapes a typical ravine landscape: the river meanders, and livestock graze on the ravine slopes. The river and the agricultural slopes together define the area. Visitors looking to focus on scenery and nature during their stay will find a clear theme here. The location between Lerum and Stenkullen provides the geographical setting; the meanders and grazed slopes characterise this natural landscape.

Swimming area and circular walking route

Aspen’s swimming area is in western Lerum, on Lake Aspen. It has a concrete jetty and a floating jetty with a diving tower. There are car parks and bicycle racks nearby, and Aspedalen commuter train station is within walking distance. This provides both a lakeside setting and practical landmarks for getting there. Riddarsten offers a different focus: a 2.5-kilometre-long, illuminated and hilly circular route. Aspen is all about the lake and jetties, while Riddarsten offers a walking loop of a specific length and hilly terrain. The two outdoor options can thus be distinguished by their respective character.

Visitor gardens and guided walks

Växtrum in Lerum consists of twelve unique visitor gardens, created by popular Swedish garden professionals and dedicated local volunteers. For travellers who want to focus on landscaped gardens rather than a river landscape or walking route, Växtrum offers a destination of its own. The different groups involved in creating the gardens are also part of their character. Växtrum also offers private guided walks through selected gardens. These are tailored to visitors’ wishes and needs, combining a garden visit with a personal guided tour.

Architectural history, art and events

Dergårdens hembygdspark is a heritage site commemorating the agricultural buildings in the centre of Lerum. The only building left from Dergården’s original farm is “John i Dergårdens stuga”. The site therefore draws attention to the area’s earlier buildings. Dergårdsgalleriet offers a different cultural focus: the municipal gallery is in the centre of Lerum, next to the library and Dergårdsteatern, and shows exhibitions of contemporary art. Thanks to its technical facilities and acoustics, the theatre can host many different kinds of events. This part of Lerum brings together a heritage site, contemporary art and a theatre with a wide range of event possibilities.

Hiking in the wider region

Beyond local destinations, the Gotaleden trail is part of the wider region. The 99-kilometre hiking trail runs between Gothenburg and Vårgårda in Västsverige. Its features include beautiful scenery, stages with stops close to town and proximity to railway stations. These details illustrate different scales of trip planning: a regional hiking trail between two cities and the 2.5-kilometre loop in Riddarsten. If you choose Lerum as a base for nature or cultural interests, you can distinguish between local destinations and a longer hiking trail in the surrounding region.
