Jonsered can be explored through several themes: the history of its factories, the design of Jonsereds Trädgårdar and trails through the landscape. When planning a stay, you can choose between industrial heritage, gardens and nature—or combine these different sides of the town.

Industrial History in Jonsered

Jonsereds Fabriker began operating in 1835, and many of its old factory buildings still remain. Jonsereds brukssamhälle is considered one of Sweden’s best-preserved industrial complexes from the second half of the 19th century. The factory’s history can also be read in individual buildings: Jonsereds power station is a K-marked historic building made of granite and still generates electricity.

Jonsereds Herrgård is also part of this history. The estate dates back to a medieval royal estate and was the home of factory founder William Gibson. Jonsereds Trädgårdar is a free interpretation of the former manor garden. There, a biodiversity trail showcases habitats such as beehives, insect hotels, a pond, and piles of leaves and brushwood. The garden thus highlights both its historical connection to the estate and the diversity of its habitats.

Discover the Factory’s History

The Jonsereds Industrihistoriska Museum on Fabriksholmen is an open-air museum. It shows what was produced in the buildings and what work in the different parts of the factory was like around 1900. Information boards and QR codes at Jonsereds Fabriker also explain what work was carried out in each area. The focus is not only on the surviving buildings, but also on the activities that were once part of everyday life there.

Jonsereds kyrka offers a different architectural theme: the church is built of white-rendered brick and designed in an English-inspired Neo-Gothic style. Its features include a slender tower and a narrow, three-sided chancel. The church’s Schiörlin organ is the smallest and second-oldest surviving Schiörlin organ in Sweden; its organ case is in its original condition.

Nature Areas and Hiking Trails

Bokedalen Nature Reserve lies just north of Jonsered. The landscape types described there include beech and oak forests, old pine forest, meadows, avenues and parkland. The Bokedalens naturstig nature trail is four kilometres long, marked with numbered beech-leaf signs, and takes about an hour to walk. If you would like to plan for an approximate walking time, this information provides a specific guide.

Jonsereds strömmar is also of interest to nature lovers: the area is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected sites and is home to salmon, dippers, kingfishers and grey wagtails. The species and protected-site features give this area a different connection to nature than Bokedalen’s forests and open spaces.

Several long-distance trails pass through Jonsered. The fifth stage of the Bohusleden passes through Jonsereds Fabriker and by Jonsereds Trädgårdar. The Gotaleden runs through Jonsered between Gothenburg and Vårgårda, offering varied hikes through an expansive landscape. If you are looking for a walk with an approximate duration, Bokedalens naturstig is the more clearly defined option; the two long-distance trails focus on their routes and hiking through the landscape. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Brewery Tours and Local Food

Poppels Brewery offers guided brewery tours in Jonsered. The tour includes a look at the fermentation tanks, brewhouse and sacks of malt, with an explanation of the individual steps in the brewing process. Afterwards, there is a beer tasting in the restaurant. Dates and availability may change; check the latest information if you would like to include the tour in your plans.

Poppels Öl&Mat in Jonsered offers a menu described as “brew-food”. It features carefully selected dishes paired with the beers. Menu details may change. The tour and restaurant offer a different focus from the trails and historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on the brewing process and the combination of food and beer.

Getting There and Planning

The commuter train between Gothenburg and Alingsås stops at Jonsered station. From there, Jonsereds Trädgårdar is a short walk away. It is recommended that you check the current transport planner for departure times. If your plans depend particularly on a hike or a brewery tour, also check the relevant trail conditions or tour dates and availability. This makes it easier to fit the different aspects of your stay into your day’s plans.
