Gothenburg: Archipelago, Museums and Haga

The Gothenburg archipelago combines island nature with public ferry connections: The southern islands can be reached by public ferries from the Saltholmen or Stenpiren ferry terminals in central Gothenburg. The Gothenburg archipelago offers beautiful beaches and nature reserves. There are also hidden swimming spots, saunas with views of the Vinga lighthouse, and seal safaris.

Also Hovås and Kvisljungeby are among the places directly associated with Gothenburg.

Nature

The cultivated section of the Gothenburg Botanical Garden covers 20 hectares and is home to 20,000 species and cultivars from more than 130 countries. The 55-hectare arboretum of the Botanical Garden is located in the Änggårdsbergen nature reserve. The Gothenburg Botanical Garden offers scheduled public guided tours throughout the year and, where possible, guided visits for private groups.

Slottsskogen was transformed into a park in 1874, with large lawns for picnics, winding paths, a zoo, houses modeled on country-specific architectural styles, and a dance pavilion. Slottsskogen's animal park is open year-round and can be visited free of charge.

Culture

The Museum of Gothenburg presents four permanent exhibitions on the history of Gothenburg, ranging from the medieval silver heart to the world's first Volvo. The collection of the Röhsska Museum comprises around 50,000 objects from the fields of design, crafts and fashion. The permanent exhibition Design Histories presents more than 500 objects from the museum collection. The Röhsska Museum's open storage displays a selection of chairs from a collection spanning more than 300 years.

The aquarium at the Maritime Museum and Aquarium houses animals and fish from around the world and has one of Europe's largest aquariums for live coral. At an interactive ship simulator, visitors can navigate a ship entering the port of Gothenburg.

The Aeroseum presents exhibitions focusing primarily on Cold War themes as well as aviation. Its facilities include a simulator hall with several aircraft and a helicopter. Interactive exhibitions and aero stations invite visitors to experiment with technology and physics.

Röda Sten Konsthall offers guided tours, lectures and creative workshops in connection with its exhibitions. Across four floors, the art gallery presents exhibitions by Swedish and international artists featuring painting, photography, dance, performances, video and sound art.

Experiences

Liseberg offers rides and other attractions, including carousels for small children, adrenaline rides and haunted houses for older visitors. At Universeum, visitors can explore science, technology and mathematics through experiences covering topics from atoms and artificial intelligence to ecosystems and equations.

Wisdome is Sweden's largest full-dome visualization dome. A Wisdome show can be booked as part of a visit to Universeum or as a standalone experience.

History

Haga is one of the oldest districts of Gothenburg and features cobblestone streets and distinctive Landshövdingehus houses. World of Volvo is a brand experience center in the heart of Gothenburg, bringing together the past and the future.

Haga Nygata is home to boutiques as well as shops selling antiques, design and crafts. Cafés in Haga serve Swedish fika classics as well as other sweet and savory dishes.
