When looking for a hotel in Dalstorp, one simple travel decision can help shape your stay: will the Jälmåleden be the main focus, or are church architecture and local history more important? The town offers specific points of interest for both. At 35 kilometres, the hiking trail is an activity in its own right; Dalstorps kyrka and the site of the old churchyard tell of different periods in history.

Hiking the Jälmåleden

The Jälmåleden is a 35 km hiking trail through scenic surroundings. It runs along the river and also loops around Dalstorpasjön and Nittorpssjön. Dalstorp is a recommended starting point for the route, with plenty of parking available there. Its stated length makes the hike an activity in its own right, rather than a short walk around town. If you are planning your trip around hiking, you can therefore include Dalstorp as a starting point.

The traces of the past along the trail also give the hike its own character. The Jälmåleden passes burial grounds from the Viking Age and the Iron Age, as well as industrial ruins from the industrial era of the 19th century. Archaeological and industrial heritage sites thus lie side by side along the route. Together with the river and the two lakes, they make this a route where landscape and history are equally central.

Church architecture and older traces

Dalstorps kyrka was built in 1964–65 to plans by Växjö architect Bent Jörgensen. It replaced a 19th-century church that was destroyed by fire in 1962. This sequence sets the present church building apart from the medieval church site, which is also part of Dalstorp’s history.

Inside, black slate slabs, white brick and sandblasted pine define the design. The bronze altarpiece is by artist Jörgen Martinsson. The combination of these materials and the artwork gives the church a clearly defined architectural character. Those interested in architectural design will find specific details here that differ from the historical traces at the site of the old churchyard.

Dalstorp’s cultural environment, which is of national interest, includes both industrial remains at the mouth of the Jälmån and the medieval church site with its abandoned churchyard. The industrial remains include the remains of an ironworks. Thus, within the same designated cultural environment, evidence of industrial history stands alongside religious heritage.

The site of the old churchyard lies by Dalstorpasjön. The cemetery and sacristy have been preserved there; beneath the sacristy is a burial chamber. The visible remains at this site therefore include both part of the former church grounds and the preserved cemetery. This distinguishes it from Dalstorps kyrka, whose interior is defined by slate, brick, pine and the bronze altarpiece.

Choose a focus for your trip

The Jälmåleden offers a hiking focus combining landscape, burial grounds and industrial ruins; the church sites bring architecture and local history to the fore.
