Bjurholm Between River Trails, Nature and Art
The Öreälven hiking trail runs between Örträsk and Agnäs through the municipality of Bjurholm and is approximately 50 kilometres long. Its route follows the untouched forest river Öreälven through deeply incised valleys with cut banks and meanders. Along the trail there are many overnight cabins and wind shelters, as well as beaches, barbecue areas and outdoor toilets.
River Landscapes
One of the notable sections is Lagnäset, a unique area with hay meadows that can stand out due to their golden-yellow globeflowers. At Lagnäset, a pedestrian suspension bridge also crosses the Öreälven. The Lögdeälven Wilderness Trail is approximately 85 kilometres long, 32 kilometres of which run within the municipality of Bjurholm. The Lögdeälven is characterised by ravine landscapes, cut banks and caves. Drakryggen is one of the most distinctive cut banks along the river.
Trails and Peaks
A marked trail leads to Balklinten at the summit of the Balberget nature reserve. The summit is 439.8 metres above sea level and offers extensive views over the Bjurholm landscape. At Balklinten there is a rest area with a barbecue and wind shelter. Balberget can be reached via the road between Umeå and Åsele. A few kilometres before Balsjö, signs point to the reserve; there is a car park at its entrance.
Art and History
In the village of Balsjö, the artwork Oh You Wonderful Land consists of eight sculptures on eight iron posts, with each sculpture having its own story. At the rapids of the Lögdeälven stands Road Abstraction, a sculpture made of traffic signs in different colours. Lergrova sells its ceramics in a small farm shop and welcomes visitors by prior appointment.
The Hembygdsgården is situated on elevated ground by the Öreälven, where the first settlement in Bjurholm was founded in 1752. Bjurholm Church was inaugurated in 1935 as the third church of the Bjurholm parish, at the centrally located site of earlier churches. The church contains an altarpiece created by Hildur Haggård in 1935. A separate entrance leads to the village of Bjurholm.
Konstvägen Sju Älvar is an approximately 350-kilometre-long art exhibition; two of the 13 artworks are located in the municipality of Bjurholm. Konsthall Väst på Fjället in Karlsbäck hosts exhibitions, opening receptions and various performances. In summer, craft courses and café days are held at Balfors Gård, often together with changing exhibitions.
Activities in Different Seasons
The Agnäsbacken alpine facility has three lifts and approximately ten runs. Admission to Älgens Hus includes a picture presentation, a guided tour of the museum and a visit to the moose. The winter snowmobile network in Bjurholm comprises 42 Swedish miles of prepared main trails. Smaller snowmobile trails lead, among other places, to barbecue areas and cabins.
The Petnäset barbecue hut can be rented in connection with a canoe trip or another event. It can be reached via a signposted turn-off from Road 353 between Bjurholm and Agnäs. The swimming pool in Bjurholm offers lane swimming or exercise swimming, public swimming, family swimming and swimming for toddlers. The ski and exercise trails in the centre of Bjurholm can be used in both summer and winter. Paddling on the Öreälven ranges from calm to more challenging experiences, depending on the section chosen.
