Aspö combines a maritime landscape with an impressive military history. Rocks for swimming, bays, forests and meadows shape the island alongside historic buildings and exhibitions. If you would like to combine culture, coast and activity during your trip, Aspö offers various places to visit for this purpose.

Fortress, Church and Military History

The island’s most prominent historical destination is Drottningskärs kastell on Aspö. The well-preserved fortress dates from the 17th century and was built between 1680 and 1769. It is part of the World Heritage Site Naval Port of Karlskrona and has four bastions named after the queens Maria, Christina, Hedvig and Ulrica. There is also a restaurant at the visitor attraction. Anyone interested in fortification architecture, Swedish history and maritime culture will find a particularly tangible connection to the island’s past here.

Aspö kyrka also adds a historical accent. The church was completed in 1891 and built in the Neo-Gothic style. Its building material is also noteworthy: the stone for its foundation was quarried and dressed on the island. This means the church can be viewed not only in terms of its period and architecture, but also through its connection to Aspö itself.

The Museum för rörligt kustartilleri presents in its exhibitions the various types of formations and units that existed within the mobile coastal artillery. The Militärmuseet för Rörligt Kustartilleri also has a unique collection of military equipment. In 2005, it was classified as so valuable that it could not be divided up. For a stay focusing on military and coastal history, these exhibitions complement a visit to the fortress.

Swimming, Walks and Cycling

Aspö offers a choice of different landscapes for swimming days. Djupvik has a gently sloping beach that is particularly suitable for small children. At Norre Strand, you can swim from the rocks. Aspö Havsbad has changing rooms; the bathing area can be reached from Karlskrona city centre by car ferry. This accommodates different preferences: a gently sloping beach, swimming from the rocks or a beach visit with changing facilities available.

Active days can also be planned in detail. A signposted forest path of approximately 2 kilometres leads from the ferry terminal to the Museum för rörligt kustartilleri and is suitable for walking or cycling. In addition, Aspö’s gravel roads and paths invite you to explore by bicycle. When choosing your accommodation, consider whether you want to focus primarily on historical destinations, swimming spots or routes for walks and cycling tours.

Getting There via Aspöleden

Aspöleden is a free car ferry between Karlskrona and Aspö. The crossing takes 25 minutes; Aspöleden is 6,700 metres long. For your planning, you should consider these figures separately: the 25 minutes refers to the crossing, while 6,700 metres indicates the length of the ferry route.
