Børkop: Watermill, Trails and Art in Nature

Børkop is a destination for visitors who do not want to limit their day to just one type of experience. The watermill, trails, cycle route and swimming centre each offer a clearly different focus.

Watermill and Rural Culture

Børkop Watermill dates back to the 16th century and is a fully functioning waterwheel mill of the geared cassette type. It grinds both groats and flour. The grounds of Børkop Watermill, including the millpond and mill meadow, cover approximately 6 hectares. All the buildings and the surrounding grounds are protected. Farbror Svends Samling is housed in the former pigsty of Børkop Watermill and displays agricultural equipment as well as household appliances. The cultural focus therefore ranges from milling technology to tangible objects from everyday rural life.

Trails by the Water and Through the Landscape

If you prefer walking trails, the routes pass through a variety of landscape features. The Søstien runs around the millpond and along the new watercourse; it is approximately 300 metres long. The Engstien leads from the mill courtyard across the meadow along the Skærup Å, over the mill canal and back along the railway line. The footpath route runs from the southern part of the mill meadow to Brøndsted Mill and follows natural ground through the old alder swamp. The watercourse, meadow, canal, railway line and alder swamp each give the trails their own distinct landscape character.

Cycle Tour and Artwork in Nature

For active days by bike, the Børkop Rundt route is 45 kilometres long and has 500 metres of elevation gain. It starts and ends in Børkop. When planning their day, cyclists can consider route length and elevation gain as separate factors. The route therefore offers a clearly defined combination of length, elevation gain, start and finish. Trolden Ene Øjesten provides a different focus: This hidden artwork in the nature of Børkop is a sculpture by Thomas Dambo made from recycled wood. In the story of Trolden Ene Øjesten, she finds a magical stone with a hole through which she can see into the future. In this way, cycling, landscape and narrative art come together within a concise thematic setting.

Swimming Centre and Seasonal Information

Børkop Swimming Centre has a 25-metre pool, diving boards and a children's pool for children and adults. During the summer season, Børkop Watermill and its museum are scheduled to be open on weekends and public holidays from 14:00 to 17:00. A circular route offers parking at Børkop Watermill and leads back to the starting point. Depending on the day's plans, outdoor exercise, mill history, nature art and swimming can therefore be considered as separate activities alongside one another.
