Mølby between the Nørreå and Cultural Heritage

The approximately 10 km-long section of the Nørreå from Mølby to Øster Lindet has a fresh current as well as a gravel and stone bed, thereby offering particularly good conditions for salmon. Mølby is partly located in an especially valuable geological conservation area and in landscapes worthy of preservation. For planning a day of walking, the approximate length of 10 km provides a clear scale that defines the section between Mølby and Øster Lindet as a continuous route; the gravel and stone bed is part of the specific character of this river section.

Trails through River and Landscape Areas

The Oksen Trail begins at Mølledamspladsen in Mølby and leads towards the winding Nørreå. From the Oksen Trail behind the houses of Mølby, there is a beautiful view of Tovskov Slotsbanke and the lake around it. The Oksen Trail also connects all the villages and settlements in the Oksenvad rural district with the Hærvejen. The trail thus leads from a starting point in Mølby towards the river landscape and onwards to the villages and settlements of the Oksenvad rural district.

In addition, a system of footpaths runs in loops around the Nørreå and continues through the farmland north of Sommersted. Archaeological Traces from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages

Northeast of Mølby, an area is designated as a cultural heritage area; cultural traces from the Early Stone Age to the Middle Ages have been preserved there. In the archaeological area of Slotsengen in Nørre Ådalen between Mølby and Neder Lert are the remains of at least three different settlements. Two of the at least three settlement remains date to the Hamburg culture, around 11,000 BC. The chronological span of the sites therefore ranges from very early settlement traces to the Middle Ages.

Tovskov Voldsted is the remains of an old fortification between Mølby and Lerte. The remains consist of a roughly 15 × 20 m, rounded mound, approximately 4 m high, with steep sides. For those interested in culture, the surroundings of Mølby therefore offer settlement remains and the mound of an old fortification as distinct historical themes side by side.

Rivers and Historical Landscape

Near Mølby, the Ørsted Å joins the Nørreå. In this area, the water of both rivers was formerly dammed in Tovskov Mølledam. The former Tovskov Mølledam is therefore part of the historical use of water near Mølby, while the confluence of the Ørsted Å and the Nørreå represents the town’s present-day connection with the rivers.
