Årøsund between harbour, coast and maritime culture

On the Little Belt, Årøsund combines maritime history with coastal views, ferry traffic and trails for active days. Maritime Årøsund includes the harbour, the pier, preserved facilities, boatbuilding craftsmanship and the ferry connection to Aarø.

Harbour, ferry and historic connections

The Årø–Årøsund cultural environment encompasses the industrial harbour of Årøsund and the ferry connection to Aarø. The Aarø ferry operates between Aarø and Årøsund and has space for 12 cars and 98 passengers. The service therefore carries both vehicles and passengers, while also forming part of the maritime character of the town. Historically, the harbour of Årøsund was once connected to Assens by ferry; this connection formed part of the postal route between Copenhagen and Hamburg. The connection to Aarø and the former route to Assens thus represent different periods in the history of the harbour.

Fortification, lighthouse and boatbuilding

Among the preserved traces is the Kystbatteriet Aarøsund. The remains are relatively well preserved: The command bunker, the crew quarters and all four gun platforms are intact. The former boat shed in Årøsund is also now used for boatbuilding. The Årøsund lighthouse is one of the buildings from the beginning of the 20th century in the Årø–Årøsund cultural environment. The preserved military structures and the boat shed still in use point to different uses in Årøsund.

The maritime tradition is also reflected in craftsmanship. The old Årøsund boatyard keeps traditional boatbuilding crafts alive. At Aarøsund Galleri, exhibitions by local artists and craftspeople change over time. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from architectural remains and harbour work to contemporary art and traditional skills. Boatbuilding craftsmanship and changing exhibitions by local artists and craftspeople represent two different aspects of cultural life in Årøsund.

Views from the pier and trails by the water

The pier in Årøsund offers views across the Little Belt. The pier promenade at Aarøsund Lystbådehavn provides particular orientation for visitors with different mobility needs: It was designed so that people with walking difficulties and wheelchair users can also walk along the 300-metre-long pier. Hikers can follow the Camino Haderslev Næs from Årøsund. The view across the Little Belt and the pier promenade combine the landscape with a route beside the water.

Fishing as part of the local character

Fishing is also part of the local character. Årøsund is described as the only place on the Little Belt where fish are still landed for sale at the fish market in Hvide Sande. Landing the fish in Årøsund and selling it in Hvide Sande connect the town with a specific fish market.
