Kelstrup: Beach, Hiking and Prehistory
Accommodation in Kelstrup
Beach and Coastal Profile
The nearby Kelstrup Beach gives the town a distinct coastal profile. Facing south, this bathing beach is located in the Kelstrup holiday home area and measures 450 metres long and 10 to 15 metres wide. Several bathing jetties line the shore, and stone groynes protect the beach. It is sandy, while the inner part of the beach profile is stony. The underwater profile is also clearly defined: the water gradually gets deeper, small waves characterise this stretch, and there is no surf. These details each reveal a different aspect of the beach: its orientation describes its location, the transition from sand to stone indicates the ground, and the groynes provide coastal protection.
Public fishing is permitted at Kelstrup Beach with a valid Danish state fishing licence. The seabed is mostly sandy, with some areas of stones and seaweed. If you plan to fish, check the current regulations in advance. A car park is located about 116 metres from the water.
Trails and Active Days
The 106-kilometre Camino Haderslev Næs runs through Hejsager and Kelstrup. Its Stage 7 runs from Halk Church to Vilstrup Church, is 15 kilometres long, and can also be walked in the opposite direction. The stage also includes a two-kilometre stretch along the popular beaches of Hejsager Beach and Kelstrup Beach. This offers three levels to consider when planning: the entire Camino, a specific stage, and its coastal section.
In the wider region, the 56.5-kilometre Hejsager – Sønderballe – Haderslev – Starup – Hejsager mountain bike loop starts in Hejsager. It passes through Sønderballe, Haderslev and Starup before returning to its starting point. The route is considered less suitable for beginners and is intended more for experienced mountain bikers. The route format also matters when planning your day: the mountain bike trail forms a loop, while Stage 7 has two named churches as its endpoints and can be walked in either direction. The options therefore differ not only in mode of transport, but also in route layout.
Prehistory and Local Life
Kelstrup Beach is designated as a group of burial mounds. A round barrow in the vicinity is considered well preserved and worthy of protection. Prehistoric round barrow no. 391015 is located in a holiday home area at Kelstrup Beach. Those interested in prehistory will find further specific points of interest in the area, alongside its coastal profile.
The nearby Kelstrup Forest Burial Ground is about 500 metres from the beach and can be reached via a well-maintained forest path. Guided visits are offered on an ongoing basis; access is subject to the operator’s regulations.
Sports clubs, cultural associations and social events take place at Næs Hallen in Kelstrup. The hall is also associated with clubs for badminton, floorball and handball. Winter activities in the Hejsager/Kelstrup area also include winter swimming and sauna use overlooking the water. These aspects add local club life and seasonal activities to the picture of beaches and hiking trails.
