Beach, Meadows and Coastal Views

Hejsager is located near Hejsager Beach and Hejsager Forest. The landscape around Hejsager is hilly, and the area offers views across land and water. A nearby cliff at Hejsager provides a rugged coastal landscape. In Hejsager, proximity to the beach, woodland, undulating terrain and open water views therefore come together.

Hejsager Beach

Hejsager Beach is 800 metres long. At the end of Hejsager Strandby, a protected beach meadow lies between the road and the beach. The beach also has a shelter with overnight accommodation for up to six people. The surrounding natural area is ideal for walks; in Hejsager, there is also an opportunity to join walking groups.

History at the Beach and in the Surrounding Area

Hejsager Beach is designated as a cultural and historical area with a group of burial mounds. Rundhøj, Hejsager (#2), has a path leading to its summit. The original Hejsagerhuset dates from the first half of the 17th century. Prehistoric traces and a historically documented building are therefore among the specific cultural references of the place.

Cycling and Water Activities

A 56.5-kilometre mountain bike loop starts and ends in Hejsager; another 45-kilometre loop also starts and ends there. The different route lengths provide a clear basis for planning an active day. In addition, Hejsager has a two-way cycle path connected to the existing cycle path to Gretbjerghus on Hejsager Strandvej.

Hejsager Beach is considered a kitesurfing beach. When fishing at Hejsager Beach, it is possible to reach water depths of up to 15 metres from the shore. Fishing is considered possible there all year round. Alongside the beach, coastal views and walking paths, the water itself is therefore also a focus of the possible activities.

Cultural Centres and Museums

Gretbjerghus is a local cultural centre in the former school in Halk and serves the area of Halk, Hejsager, Sode and Grarup. Local history associations are active at Gretbjerghus. The site thus combines local cultural activities with the historical surroundings that are also visible in Hejsager and at the beach.

The open-air museum of Museum Sønderjylland – Arkæologi Haderslev comprises historic farmsteads and buildings from Sønderjylland, a rare post mill and prehistoric graves. For visitors interested in cultural history, the range therefore extends from rural buildings and a distinctive mill to traces from prehistoric times.

Food and Drink by the Water

Hejsager Strandgrill at Hejsager Beach offers grilled dishes, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, ice cream and draught beer, as well as views of the water. Pinnebergheim Café places emphasis on good local ingredients, as many of which as possible are produced locally. Together, these details complete the picture of a coastal town where the beach, landscape, culture and regional food offerings stand alongside one another.
