Oxelösund between city, sea and archipelago

In the coastal town of Oxelösund, the city meets the Baltic Sea archipelago. Between rocks, the sea, historic harbor connections and nature-rich paths, there are many different settings for days by the water and insights into the region’s history.

Coast and nature

Femöre is a nature reserve suitable for visitors year-round. Most of the Femöre peninsula and the surrounding sea belong to this nature reserve. On the western and southern sides, swimming from the rocks is possible near the bathing ladders. A roughly 6 km circular section of the Sörmlandsleden trail also leads through the landscape on Femöre.

The Brannäs Våtmark wetland is home to a rich variety of birdlife. The area also includes a birdwatching tower, a barbecue area and good opportunities for swimming from the rocks. Near Frösängs gärde, there is a wetland trail open to all visitors, featuring a walking path with benches.

Jogersö is home to Sörmland’s largest sea bathing area with a sandy beach. The bathing area has jetties, a diving tower and an accessibility-adapted ramp.

Active adventures

The trails and water-based activities are spread across several locations. Along the Furön route, there is a shelter with a fire pit directly by the water, as well as a bathing spot and a toilet. Furön can be reached by boat from Gamla Oxelösund. Jogersö has a 2.5 km illuminated training track that is used as a ski trail in winter when there is sufficient snow.

At Jogersö beach, Oxelösund Adventure Park offers kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals. The provider also organizes guided kayaking tours through the archipelago, for which no prior experience is required. A kayaking course teaches technique, how to launch a kayak and safety skills. Also on Jogersö, Oxelösunds Äventyrspark offers a high ropes course and zip lines.

Kulturstigen is a blue-marked hiking trail through Gamla Oxelösund.

Maritime history

Femörefortet is a Cold War museum in a large underground facility beneath the Femöre nature reserve. Entry to Femörefortet requires a guided tour; the gun emplacements in the outdoor area can be visited freely.

Sjöfartsmuseet provides information about pilotage from the 17th century to the present day, an 80-year shipping company history built on ore transport, and the history of the harbor. The site is home to Sweden’s first motorized pilot boat and a small lighthouse.

Skärgårdsmuseet in Gamla Oxelösund presents an annually updated exhibition in summer about the Eriksson fishing family at Grantorpet. The museum also includes a boathouse with old traditional boats. Lotsarkivet is a small museum about the pilots who lived and worked in the Oxelösund archipelago. The open-air exhibition “Sjöfart och kustliv” focuses on people whose lives depended on the sea.

Along this route, signs provide information about life in the past and the construction of some older houses.

Historical sites

S:t Botvids kyrka is a concrete church from 1957, designed by Rolf Bergh. Stjärnholms kyrka dates from the 1670s and is one of the oldest buildings in Oxelösund.

Gamla vattentornet is a listed water tower from the late 19th century. As a sight, it stands between Oxelösund city center and the steel mill, north of the road to Gamla Oxelösund.
