Trosa amid archipelago landscape, nature and history
The Municipality of Trosa has a varied landscape of open plains, moraine uplands, glacial ridges and rocky outcrops that continue into an archipelago landscape. There are 16 nature reserves in the Municipality of Trosa. Between the coast, forests, wetlands and historic sites, this creates a diverse setting in which nature and cultural themes exist closely side by side.
Nature
Kråmö Nature Reserve offers hiking-friendly forests and laid-out trails. There are opportunities for swimming there from smooth rocks and at small beaches. In Bokö-Askö Nature Reserve, a two-kilometre trail leads through an old cultural landscape; there are also opportunities for swimming along the rocky coast.
Tomtaklintskogen Nature Reserve has marked hiking trails and a diverse range of flora and fauna. Lånestaheden Nature Reserve is home to several rare plant species due to its limestone bedrock. Lånestaheden is also one of the richest archaeological sites in Södermanland.
Luckebol encompasses old natural pine forest, mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, small swamp forests, woodland edges rich in deciduous trees, stands of oak and hazel, as well as a small meadow. There are no marked trails; visitors make their own way along existing paths and through the area.
The Tullgarn och Furholmen area encompasses deciduous forest, pastures, coastal meadows, wetlands, lakes and a long coastline with small islands and skerries. Furholmen features limestone-rich rock formations and species-rich flora with several rare species. Different landscape forms and types of trails can be compared directly when planning your own visit.
Hiking and activities
Nynäs Nature Reserve offers opportunities for swimming along the coast and berthing places for boats. Fishing is possible there subject to special regulations, and cross-country skiing is available in winter. Shorter and longer routes run along the Sörmlandsleden; there are also shelters and barbecue areas. Stages 53 to 56 of the Sörmlandsleden are located in the Municipality of Trosa.
A path from Tullgarn Palace passes Västerviken, a good place for birdwatching, and runs through oak pastures to viewpoints overlooking Tullgarnsviken. Naturkartan for Trosa includes nature reserves, Natura 2000 sites, as well as cycling, mountain biking and hiking trails.
The Vitalis recreation area offers activities all year round. It has an approximately 1.7-kilometre MTB trail rated Blue, with green sections.
History and culture
In Vagnhärad, the tower and the vaults inside the church were probably built in the middle of the 15th century. The church contains a 15th-century sculpture of Mary and a 15th-century altarpiece. In Trosa, the town church was completed in 1710 and inaugurated in 1711.
The oldest part of Västerljung Church dates from the 12th century. The church has an altarpiece made in Lübeck towards the end of the 15th century. A self-guided audio-guide tour of central Trosa takes about an hour and uses historical images.
Garvaregården in central Trosa houses the Trosa City Museum. Garvaregården comprises a tanner's house and workshop, offering an insight into a former craftsman's yard. Sävö has a small museum about the history of pilotage.
