Ystad Between Monastic Culture, Film and Sandskog

Immediately east of Ystad lies the Ystad Sandskog nature reserve. The Skåneleden SL4 Österlen, Stage 1, runs through Sandskog. During the summer months, the sandy beach in Ystad Sandskog is often used for swimming and sunbathing and is also a popular area for walking. In the wetter areas, with a little luck you may see the rare marsh violet as well as the orchids lesser butterfly-orchid and coralroot orchid.

If you are weighing up nature experiences, urban history, film and active routes for your trip, Ystad offers different themes within a compact narrative setting. The following places and routes each have their own focus, without requiring you to commit to just one type of travel.

Culture

Klostret i Ystad is Ystad's museum of urban history. The Franciscan monastery in Ystad was founded in 1267, and the monastery wing was inaugurated as a museum and library in 1912. Theatre has been performed in Ystad since the 17th century; today's Ystads Teater was inaugurated on 12 February 1894.

Ystad Art Museum presents a selection from its collection in several thematic exhibitions. It mainly collects art connected to Skåne. The collection dates back to the late 19th century and primarily comprises art from the 20th century to the present day.

Film and walking tours

Ystad Studios Visitor Center is a film experience centre in Ystad. On request, it offers guided tours, lectures and workshops. Visitors can record their own film scenes in the green-screen studio at Ystad Studios. The first 13 Wallander films were shot at Ystad Studios.

A Wallander crime walking tour takes you to Wallander's favourite places, including a pastry café and his home, and is based on Henning Mankell's “Fotografens död”. A digital, self-guided walking tour in Ystad leads to medieval buildings and well-known filming locations in the town centre. A challenging walking tour runs through Ystad's charming lanes characterised by half-timbered houses.

For you, the tours mainly differ in their approach: a literary route follows a specific crime plot, a digital route combines medieval buildings with filming locations, and the challenging route focuses on the lanes characterised by half-timbered houses.

Cycling and transport

Cykelleden Skåne Route 102 runs through Ystad's picturesque town centre. Historierundan takes cyclists along the coast to Svarte. Both routes offer different perspectives, between the townscape and the coast.

The 101-km Ystad–Österlenbanan railway line runs between Malmö and Simrishamn via Lockarp and Ystad. The municipality of Ystad has train, regional bus and city bus services. At Ystad Visitor Center, visitors receive recommendations for attractions and excursions, help with questions about the destination, and maps and brochures.

The Ystad destination also includes the places Svarte, Köpingebro, Löderup, Kåseberga, Nybrostrand and Ystad.
