Coast, nature and Ales Stenar in KÃ¥seberga

Kåseberga combines a distinctive coastal landscape with maritime history and Ales Stenar. The Hammars backar-Kåsebergaåsen area stretches for more than ten kilometres along Skåne’s eastern south coast. Its cliffs rise approximately thirty metres above the plain behind them and define the character of the landscape. Walking through a distinctive coastal landscape

The Skåneleden SL4 Österlen, Stage 2, passes through the Hammars backar-Kåsebergaåsen area. Kåsebergaåsen is also home to the sand-steppe habitat, which is very rare in Sweden and has a distinctive, species-rich flora. This combination makes the landscape interesting for walks and longer hikes, without reducing nature to an ordinary beach setting.

Another special feature appears in spring: Kåseberga is an important place for observing migrating seabirds, especially eider ducks. Large numbers pass through there from early to mid-April. A marked walking trail from Kåseberga leads to Ales Stenar. The site consists of 59 stones arranged in the shape of a ship and is Sweden’s largest and best-preserved ship setting.

Harbour, fishing village and regional history

The harbour is the village’s second main focal point. It has around 20 guest berths. Facilities include food services, a kiosk, showers, toilets and a slipway. A small museum at the harbour offers insight into Kåseberga’s history as a fishing village. The built-up surroundings also retain the character of a 19th-century fishing village.

KÃ¥seberga Fisk is part of the local food culture. Since opening in 1968, the smokehouse has smoked fish over an open fire using alder wood. Smoked fish is sold there, and lunch is served in the smokehouse by the sea. This makes it possible to experience the harbour not only as a waterside starting point, but also as a place with its own craft and culinary history.

Exploring on foot, by bike or on the water

For cyclists, the South Coast Trail leads to Kåseberga harbour. From there, they can continue on foot to Ales Stenar. The possible approaches to the cultural monument therefore differ: the marked walking trail starts in Kåseberga, while the South Coast Trail initially lists the harbour as its destination. Kåseberga is also considered one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after paragliding locations and is visited annually by pilots from across Europe.
