Skurup between Brick Gothic and Coastal Trails

Skurup’s history is particularly evident in the railway settlement: it is of national interest for cultural heritage preservation and represents the Swedish station communities of Scania around the turn of the 20th century. In the town centre, this historic character continues in Skurup Gothic, an architectural style made of red brick that still defines the town centre today. Numerous buildings are made of machine-produced red brick; at the same time, the town centre has an altered grid layout.

Culture and history

Skurup Church was originally built around the year 1200 in the form of a Romanesque basilica. Its choir and apse contain paintings. Churches in the immediate area also form part of the town’s cultural surroundings: Svenstorp Church, Slimminge Church and Gärdslöv Church are each located in the immediate vicinity of Skurup, while Villie Church is located in the surrounding area.

Skurup City Park was laid out in 1927, primarily according to a Danish garden concept. Rhododendrons and old, mature trees grow in the park. The municipality’s four libraries are another public resource. They are located in Skurup, Abbekås, Rydsgård and Skivarp. Books, magazines and films can be borrowed there; rooms are also available for reading, studying or using computers.

Nature

The municipality of Skurup extends from south to north across parts of Söderslätt, the hilly landscape of southern Scania and the southern slope of Romeleåsen. Within this landscape, Zimmermans backe lies on the northern edge of Skurup as a nature reserve on a high elevation. The summit is approximately 25 metres above the town of Skurup and offers views of the surrounding area.

Bräknehus north of Skurup features various trees that support a diverse bird population. A lit, mostly gravelled 2.5-kilometre loop also runs around Bräknehus and Zimmermans backe. The Svaneholm Vassen nature reserve features old oak and beech woodland as well as an accessible path around the lake.

Mossbystrand Nature Reserve has a sandy beach suitable for swimming. The dry meadow flora there includes pasqueflower and sand thyme. An inviting white sandy beach has an accessible ramp, a bathing jetty and picnic areas.

Trails between the town and the coast

The Skåneleden trail between Mossbystrand and Bingsmarken is 12 kilometres long. It runs along the coast and passes small fishing villages and idyllic harbours. Southeast of Skurup, a 1.2-kilometre, lit and asphalted route for pedestrians and cyclists runs around Lake Prästamossen.

A health trail runs around the lake. In addition, there are marked walking trails measuring 2.6 and 4.2 kilometres. This provides routes of varying lengths, different surfaces, and both coastal and lake-oriented trails.

Örnakullen, a hill, is located in the immediate vicinity of Skurup. Romeleklint, also a hill, is located in the surrounding area of Skurup. In the wider regional area are Gislövs Strandmark, a beach, and Smygehuk, a cape.
