Sankt Ibb – Churches, Island History and Culture

Sankt Ibb focuses on maritime history, island culture and specific places by the water. S:t Ibbs kyrka dates from the 13th century and stands high up on Kyrkbacken. From there, the view stretches across the Øresund. The selection of attractions ranges from medieval church history to museums, art and a harbour museum.

S:t Ibbs kyrka and Tycho Brahe’s legacy

The oldest part of S:t Ibbs kyrka was built during the medieval herring fishing and trade in and around the Øresund. The period in which it was built thus links the church to the maritime economic history of the Øresund. Guided tours of the church are available year-round by prior booking.

The Tycho Brahe Museum is housed in Allhelgonakyrkan. The Tycho Brahe Memorial additionally includes the archaeological remains of Uranienborg Castle. The museum site and the location of the memorial therefore lead to different historical settings: Allhelgonakyrkan and the remains of Uranienborg.

Local history museum, art gallery and harbour

Nämndemansgården is a local history museum. Well-preserved interiors can be seen at Nämndemansgården; exhibitions explore the history of the farm and the island of Ven. The farm represents its own historical focus; other stops include the medieval church, the archaeological remains of Uranienborg and the Harbour Museum. Vens Kulturhus provides a different cultural emphasis and functions as an art gallery during large parts of the year. The cultural sites are thus associated with different buildings and locations: farm, church, archaeological remains, fishermen’s hut and art gallery. Alongside historical subjects, art is therefore also part of Sankt Ibb’s cultural offering.

The history of the harbour is also part of Sankt Ibb’s character. On 1 July 2023 at 3 p.m., the Hamnmuseum of Kyrkbackens hamn opened in a traditional fishermen’s hut in the western part of the harbour. The opening therefore took place considerably later than the church’s medieval construction history. The fishermen’s hut also anchors the museum in the western part of the harbour.

Finding your way between Bäckviken, Kyrkbacken and Ven runt

A regional bus runs from Bäckviken towards Kyrkbacken. Visitors to S:t Ibbs kyrka should tell the bus driver their destination. On its descent to Kyrkbacken, the Ven runt circular hiking route passes Sankt Ibbs kyrka. The options for reaching the church are therefore a bus journey from Bäckviken and a hiking section on the descent to Kyrkbacken.

Vens Cykeluthyrning is located less than 300 metres from the ferry arrival point on Ven. The bicycle rental service is therefore situated in the arrival area; the regional bus is associated with Bäckviken and Kyrkbacken, while the circular hiking route leads to the church.
