Landskrona between the Øresund, nature and history

In the Hilleshögs dalar nature reserve, high, sandy slopes and gently rolling hills descend towards the Øresund. From there, you can enjoy views of the sound and the island of Ven. The valley’s geology probably includes a dead-ice depression formed during the Ice Age; other parts are presumably the result of soil creep after the ice retreated.

The selection of places also includes Landskrona, Härslöv, Kyrkbacken, Annelöv, Häljarp, Glumslöv and Sankt Ibb.

Nature

The Sandbergen loop is 3.2 kilometres long and leads through the grazed sand hills and green valleys of Hilleshögs dalar. A 13-kilometre hike on the Skåneleden trail runs from Landskrona through Hilleshögs dalar and Glumslövs backar to Rydebäck.

Birds can be observed all year round from the birdwatching tower at Lundåkrabukten. The gently flowing Saxån at Lundåkrabukten is rich in fish and is home to, among others, perch, pike, ide and trout.

Protected nature is also part of the local landscape: the northern part of Gråen has been a nature reserve since 1952. Its ponds and ditches are home to, among others, grey herons and cormorants. To protect the birdlife, entering the Gråen nature reserve is prohibited from 15 March to 1 August.

Culture

The Landskrona museum’s “Människor som vi” exhibition focuses on the people who lived on Sweden’s Skåne coast 8,000 years ago. It is based on finds from excavations at the Tågerup settlement. The “1413” exhibition uses archaeological finds, maps, music and an animated film to tell how Landskrona came into being and what life in the town may have been like in the 15th century.

On the island of Ven, the Tycho Brahe Museum stands at the site of Tycho Brahe’s research centre from the late 16th century, with a castle and an underground observatory. A guided tour takes visitors to Uraniborg, Stjärneborg and the surrounding castle garden, combining replicas of instruments with original objects. The reconstructed Renaissance garden contains 200 known garden plants from the 16th century.

The sculpture park by Landskrona Konsthall contains 20 works by 19 artists. In Kaptensgårdens sculpture park, you can stroll among the sculptures in the green area of Slottsparken; a printed and a digital map show the locations and names of all the artworks. The atrium courtyard of Landskrona Konsthall also contains a Japanese garden created by Ulla Mohlin in 1989.

History

Gråen is an artificial island off Landskrona, created at the end of the 18th century to protect the harbour from military attacks. Today, only the powder tower from the early 19th century remains.

The Citadellkolonierna form a unique cultural landscape that reflects Sweden’s defence history and the development of the allotment movement. Visitors can experience historic cottages, green gardens and paths such as Lavendelstigen and Kärleksstigen. Citadellet was built between 1549 and 1559 by Christian III of Denmark and is considered the best-preserved 16th-century castle in the Nordic region, as well as Sweden’s only surviving earthwork fortress.

The history of the allotment gardens includes Rothoffska kolonin. It comprises a house built in 1903, one of the area’s oldest surviving cottages, furnished as it would have been at the beginning of the 20th century. A small exhibition explores the history of the allotment and the Rothoff family.

Borstahusen is an old fishing village. In the picturesque neighbourhoods around the harbour, houses from the late 18th century line the streets, which can be explored on foot.

With children

Stage 9 of the Skåneleden SL5 Öresund runs through Saxtorpsskogen and past a shelter suitable for a break or overnight stay. Saxtorpsskogen has a network of trails ranging from 0.5 to 5 kilometres in length. Two short circular trails specially designed for children combine play with experiences in nature.

At Landskrona museum, Trädgårdslandet offers interactive play elements for children aged 0 to 5. At Ateljé Nell, materials are available for children and families to work creatively on their own.

From Landskrona railway station, bus 3 takes you to the town centre free of charge upon presentation of your ticket. From the Rådhustorget stop, it is just a few minutes’ walk to Landskrona museum. The Sydkustleden trail runs through the centre of Landskrona.
