Limhamn: Coast, Harbour and Culture
Limhamn combines the coast, maritime history and unusual nature experiences. The Limhamn limestone quarry is particularly characteristic: the area has been a nature reserve since 2011 and is managed by the City of Malmö. Visits are subject to a clear rule: the limestone quarry can only be visited as part of a guided tour organised by Vilda Malmö. Numerous shark teeth can be found in some of the limestone layers, left by sharks that swam here millions of years ago.
Limestone Quarry, Beach and Bathing Culture
The coastal areas around Limhamn also offer different experiences. At Sibbarps kallbadhus, you can enjoy cold-water bathing in the open sea all year round. Sibbarpsstranden has bathing jetties and large areas for picnics. The shallow section of beach beside Sibbarps kallbadhus, on the side facing Malmö, has protective stones in the water and is suitable for smaller children. This means that different ways of enjoying the coast can be found within the same coastal area, from the open sea to the shallow beach section.
The history of limestone extraction is also visible by the water. In the water off Kåsen lie the remains of Sandegårds brygga, a stone pier formerly used for loading limestone onto ships. Kåsen on Strandgatan is the only preserved old landing place in Limhamn. There are also several traditional fishermen’s cottages there. The southern part of Limhamns hamnområde contains a marina and fishermen’s cottages; many recreational anglers can also be found there.
Museum, Church and Local History
Limhamns Museum was inaugurated on 27 June 1959 in the old Soldattorpet. The Soldattorpet stands on a remnant of Järavallen and above one of Sweden’s oldest Stone Age settlements. This historic setting connects the local history with a tangible location.
Another prominent cultural site is Limhamns kyrka. The red-brick church has transept arms to the north and south, as well as a patterned slate roof, and was inaugurated on Thanksgiving Day in October 1890. The church contains a votive ship: a model of the frigate Calmare Nyckel made by Ture Hall and donated by Enar Nilsson-Neglén in 1962. The gallery organ was originally built in 1867 by P L Åkerman & Lund Orgelfabrik in Stockholm and has been rebuilt several times over the years.
The historic character also includes Hammars park, created towards the end of the 19th century on the initiative of Carl Anders Hammar, as well as the Sillabåtar. These boats, measuring 23 to 30 feet in length, were widespread in south-western Scania in the early 20th century, particularly in Limhamn and Malmö.
Waterfront Promenade and Routes to Malmö
At Cementkajen, a new park and a new square form a continuous green waterfront promenade with seating and illuminated sculptures. For active days, the Super Bike Path is also relevant: it runs from Linnégatan in Limhamn via Erikslustvägen and Regementsgatan to central Malmö. This makes it possible to consider the waterfront, harbour, historic sites and the connection towards Malmö as different priorities when choosing where to stay.
For a broader selection of destinations, you can also visit Bunkeflostrand, Sibbarp, Malmö and Tygelsjö.
