Höganäs: Ceramic History and Paths by the Water

Höganäs can be discovered through two closely connected perspectives: its town and ceramic history, and paths that run along the water and lead to Kvickbadet beach. If you want to weigh up culture, a creative activity and a route outdoors for your trip, the town offers specific points of reference for doing so.

Town History between Brickworks and Ceramics

The KKAM Museum presents an exhibition on the history of Höganäs. It covers the fishing village, the brickworks, Folkparken, and the local production of ceramics, corsets and books.

Two points in time are particularly revealing when it comes to the history of ceramics. A brickworks was founded in Höganäs in the 1820s. Around 1830, the production of lead-glazed ceramic household objects also began. The brickworks was therefore established before the production of ceramic household objects began. The sequence of events extends from the founding of the brickworks to the later production of everyday ceramic objects.

Kulturhus and Library Garden

Höganäs Kulturhus is a meeting place with Sweden’s newest library, an exhibition hall, a stage, a café and rooms for meetings. It therefore brings together several cultural uses in one location. The Kulturhus is also home to Sweden’s only library garden. The greenery and existing seating complement the indoor spaces with an explicitly designed outdoor area. During your stay, you can therefore distinguish between the town history exhibition, exhibition hall and stage, and the landscaped library garden with seating, without mixing these themes together.

Try Ceramics Yourself

The activity Prova på-drejning is aimed at participants who want not only to look at ceramics but also to work with it themselves. After a joint introduction and demonstration, you turn your own piece on the potter’s wheel. During the activity, a ceramic artist from KKAM provides personal instruction and supervision. The process includes several steps: the introduction and demonstration are followed by turning your own piece, after which the workshop staff fire and glaze the finished work. This clearly distinguishes the experience from a museum visit, where the town’s history and local ceramic production are the main focus.

Paths to the Water and Kvickbadet

Two sections of trail lead to Kvickbadet. The Helsingborg–Höganäs section of Kattegattleden runs along the water and leads to Kvickbadet beach south of Höganäs harbour. On Kullaleden, one section runs from the harbour of Viken, Vikens hamn, to Kvickbadet in Höganäs. The two sections differ in their starting points: one lies between Helsingborg and Höganäs, while the other begins at the harbour of Viken. Kvickbadet is the shared point of reference for both sections of trail.
