Culture and History

St. Johannis Church was built around 1250 as a late Romanesque fieldstone church. Its structure comprises a rectangular nave and a recessed box choir. The original design retains the east windows; on the sides there is a granite portal to the south and a brick portal to the north. The west wall dates from 1799, while the southern porch dates from 1830.

In 1891 and 1892, the church was redesigned in the Gothic Revival style by the architect Adalbert Hotzen. As part of this redesign, its interior was given a basilica-like appearance. The church architect Johannes Otzen was born in the municipality.
