The former railway embankment of the light railway, locally known as the Old Railway Embankment, now serves as a hiking trail from Ruhwinkel towards Bornhöved.

Hiking and Cycling

Historic municipal footpath no. 5 leads from the village via Altekoppel, the old military road, Vier and the moorland. Historic footpath no. 4 provides a shortcut towards Altekoppel and the bathing area. Ruhwinkel also offers cycling and hiking trails that pass by lakes and run through forests.

Nature

The Fuhlensee nature reserve comprises reed beds, alder swamp forest and botanically valuable wet meadows. Fuhlensee is part of the Bornhöved lake chain, which consists of six lakes that are partially connected to one another. Rare species such as kingfishers and broad-leaved marsh orchids can be found in the Fuhlensee area. Ruhwinkel has a small-scale hedgerow landscape with beech and oak trees. A bathing area is located at Lake Schierensee, north of Fuhlensee.

Culture and History

The Lindenallee in Schönböken is 1.1 kilometres long and includes approximately 240 lime trees. It is listed as a natural monument in the Plön district. The Iven-Kruse-Weg begins at a house associated with the poet Iven Kruse and commemorates his work.

Geographical Location

The former B404, now district road K43, runs west of Ruhwinkel along the route between Bad Segeberg and Kiel. The A21 runs parallel to the former narrow-gauge railway line between Kiel and Bad Segeberg.
