Between the beach, steep cliffs and the bay

Between white sandy beaches and wooded steep cliffs, Hohwacht combines different sides of the Baltic coast. The Hohwacht Flound is located directly on the main bathing beach. The sea platform features 370 m² of oak planks and an approximately 24-metre-high steel pylon; it is considered a distinctive element of the newly redesigned promenade and a popular photo opportunity. Access to the Baltic Sea at Hohwacht Beach slopes gently.

Experience nature and stay active

At the sheltered bay of Alt-Hohwacht, the protected shallow-water area provides suitable conditions for first attempts at water sports. The surfing and sailing school in Alt-Hohwacht offers courses in all categories; SUPs and kayaks are available for hire at the pier in Hohwacht. The Hohwacht Ausguck viewing platform can be reached via the path above the wooded steep cliffs behind the beach promenade and offers a view across the entire bay.

The Hohwacht Bay Nature Experience Trail runs through the municipalities of Hohwacht and Blekendorf and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The 10-km circular trail features visitor guidance and informative signage. The nature and experience trail is aimed at families, children and school groups and provides background knowledge about nature. The crane observation tower in Hohwacht is used for undisturbed crane watching.

The W2 hiking route, “The Lighthouse Loop”, begins at the Seestraße car park in Hohwacht and leads westwards along the promenade, through the adjoining dune landscape or along the beach to Lippe marina. Route W1 from Hohwacht to Weissenhaus Castle begins at the Buchholz car park in Hohwacht and leads, among other places, into the Sehlendorfer Binnensee nature reserve. The Kronswarder nature reserve includes the spits and beach-ridge biotopes between Großer Binnensee, Hohwacht and the Baltic Sea.

Golf, church and special places

For an active choice of destination, the Hohwacht golf facility offers a varied 18-hole course, a compact 9-hole course and the modern “Golfodrom”. In St. Jürgen’s Church in Hohwacht, the interior design with semicircular rows of pews arranged opposite the open altar area is suitable for concerts and other events. The votive ship “Norske Loeve” is also located in the church. Historic beach huts from the 1950s can be viewed in the dunes on the main beach. The large shipwreck “Seetiger” is located in Hohwacht’s Pirate Camp and can be reached via a cable car, a bridge or a slide.

At the turn of the year, the traditional Strandleuchten has welcomed the New Year in Hohwacht for more than 15 years. The torchlight procession leads from Alt-Hohwacht along the steep cliffs and the beach to the “Flunder” pier. At World Fish Sandwich Day, participants can submit their participant card, bearing at least three stamps, at the Hohwacht Bay Tourism stand at the Hohwacht Flound or in the letterbox at the tourist information office on Berliner Platz.
