History in the Town
The Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1683. Some of the materials used came from St. Nicholas Church, which was destroyed by storms in 1558. The two dates mark different events: 1558 refers to the destruction of the older church, while 1683 marks the construction of the Church of the Assumption of Mary. A reconciliation obelisk on its exterior wall commemorates the residents of Łeba and the surrounding villages who lost their lives in the First World War. The granite boulder is 2 metres high and 1 metre wide.
Another part of the town’s history is Łeba’s oldest house. It stands at 86 Kościuszki Street and was built by the merchant and consul Johann G. Mampe at the former address of 18 Main Street. The current street name and the former address refer to one and the same house, whose history is thus linked to the town’s development. Together with the church and the obelisk, it offers a different way to explore Łeba’s past: through a residential house, a place of worship, and a public memorial.
Maritime History and Collections
A replica of the Świerkowa Tratwa, or “Spruce Raft,” is located in the marina. The raft is associated with the voyage of three sailors from Łeba to Sweden on 28 August 1957. One of the three sailors was Andrzej Urbańczyk, who later became known as a sailor. The replica commemorates a specific journey across the Baltic Sea and adds a maritime story to the historic sites. Visitors interested in seafaring and Łeba’s connection with Sweden will find a different subject here than at the town’s memorial sites.
The Butterfly Museum in Łeba features a permanent exhibition with 102 entomological display cases. They contain more than 4,000 butterflies and other insects from almost every part of the world. The number of display cases and the variety of species on show give the exhibition its distinctive character. The Amber Museum focuses on something different: it is a private amber museum and is considered Poland’s largest private amber museum. Visitors whose interests lean more towards natural history or amber can include these museums as separate points of interest in their plans.
Circular Route in the Surrounding Area
In the area around Łeba, a circular route subject to a seasonal fee runs from Stara Łeba along the seacoast and via Łącka Dune, returning to Stara Łeba. The route is 15.10 kilometres long. Both the starting point and the return point are Stara Łeba. The distance and the seasonal fee information are important details for planning a day trip.
