History and Place Names

The settlement was first mentioned or recorded in 1664, at that time under the name Starkowa Hutta. Its origins are connected with land clearance: Starkowa Huta developed on land cleared from the forest that belonged to the monastery in Kartuzy. To establish the village, monks brought German Protestants here from Western Pomerania.

The Kashubian place name is recorded as Starkòwô Hëta; historical German forms include Starkhütte and Starkenhütte.
