Collegiate Church and Kashubian Culture

The Gothic collegiate church in Kartuzy dates from the 14th century and bears witness to the activities of the Carthusian Order. Its Baroque roof is particularly distinctive: its shape resembles a coffin lid. It symbolizes the Order’s monastic way of life and the motto “memento mori.” The architecture and its significance can therefore be considered together: the roof’s shape is not only a striking feature of the building, but also refers to a central idea of the Order.

The Kashubian Museum offers another way to explore regional culture. In the main building, the exhibits are spread across eight exhibition rooms. They include objects from the working lives of local people and works of Kashubian folk art. The different themes give you the opportunity to explore both everyday life and artistic expression.

The museum also includes an outbuilding, which opened in 2019 following extensive revitalization. It houses Bazyl’s forge and the exhibition “Kashubian Modernity Grows from Its Roots.” The museum’s offerings therefore include not only the eight rooms in the main building but also these two specific attractions in the outbuilding.

Music adds to the cultural calendar throughout the year: every summer, the Kartuzy Organ and Chamber Music Festival takes place in the collegiate church. If you choose to visit in summer, you can include this recurring festival as a cultural highlight in its own right.

Forest Trails, Lakeshore and a Viewpoint

For outdoor activity, the green Nordic walking route around Kartuzy has a clearly described character. It starts and ends at Ławka Asesora and runs entirely through the forest. Along the way, wide, paved paths lead through hilly terrain. These details help you assess the character of the circuit: it combines forest and paved surfaces, while passing through a hilly landscape. The Promenada Asesora is a separate footpath and cycle path along the shore of Lake Karczemne. It is connected to Ławka Asesora; the bench serves as a viewpoint overlooking Kartuzy.
