Ikla between Coastal Hiking and History

Ikla is a starting point for different routes that combine the coastal landscape, nature observation and regional history. In Estonia, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route begins here. The section between Ikla and Treimani follows the old road from Pärnu to Riga, making a historic transport route part of the hiking trail. Those considering a longer route can also find the 370-kilometre Oandu–Ikla hiking trail.

There are several good birdwatching spots along the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route. The route thus combines coastal hiking and birdwatching. In addition to the section between Ikla and Treimani, the Oandu–Ikla hiking trail extends for 370 kilometres. The two routes therefore differ significantly in length.

Coastal Routes for Hiking and Cycling

Ikla is also at the end of the Romantic Coastal Route. This runs from Virtsu along Pärnu Bay to Häädemeeste, Kabli and Ikla. The route connects several destinations on Pärnu Bay with the coastal section to Ikla. The Baltic Coastal Hiking Route, by contrast, begins in Ikla; on the section to Treimani, it follows the old road from Pärnu to Riga.

The coastal cycling route offers another perspective. Its first 30 kilometres run along a quiet coastal road. The 30 kilometres refer exclusively to the coastal cycling route; they are not a length specification for the hiking trails.

Historical Insights into Ikla

The history of the place includes an event on 14 June 1991: on that day, special units of the Soviet militia attacked the Ikla and Heinaste border posts. The incident therefore affected not only the border post in Ikla, but also the one in Heinaste.

Another historical reference is the Riisselja–Ikla railway line. It was closed on 30 September 1975. The closed railway line thus stands alongside the hiking, coastal and cycling routes as an example of different forms of transport in and around Ikla.

Museums, Refreshments and Practical Information

At Uue-Jaani Talu, there is a demolition museum and a farm museum in addition to the accommodation. The two institutions focus on different aspects: the farm museum provides an insight into rural life and work.

For a break before or after a tour, Via Ikla Bistro offers snacks, meals, coffee and soft drinks around the clock. Via Ikla also has a 24-hour fast-charging station for electric vehicles with a maximum charging capacity of up to 150 kW. The bistro and fast-charging station are available around the clock: one service focuses on food and drinks, while the other is for charging electric vehicles.
