Häädemeeste: Coastal Trail, Nature and Culture

Häädemeeste on Estonia’s Baltic coast is a good choice if you want to combine coastal hiking, nature observation, beaches and regional history. You can experience the landscape both on a multi-day trail and on short nature paths; museums and churches also offer insights into the maritime and local past.

Coastal Hiking between Kabli and Ikla

The Coastal Hiking Route is part of the European long-distance trail E9, which begins at Cape St. Vincent in Portugal and ends in Tallinn. For regional orientation, the Kopra–Ikla section is particularly interesting: it is about 74 kilometres long, passes through Kabli and Treimani in Häädemeeste Parish, and ends in the village of Ikla on the Estonian-Latvian border. Numerous rest areas, fire pits and campsites make it possible to hike this section over several days. The varying route lengths allow you to choose between a longer coastal route and individual nature experiences.

Kabli and the Birdlife

A compact way to access nature is the 1.8-kilometre Kabli Nature Trail, which begins at the Kabli Visitor Centre. The visitor centre offers natural history exhibitions and nature films and provides access to the trail. Along the way, documented facilities include a nesting-box area and two birdwatching towers. The Kabli Bird Station operates regularly every year from mid-August to early November and is run by the Estonian Environmental Agency. In autumn, it features a 17-metre-high Heligoland trap. Birds have been ringed there and migration has been studied for more than 50 years. Kabli Beach is only a few hundred metres from the bird station, nature trail and visitor centre.

Short Routes through Coastal and Bog Landscapes

Another nature route is the 2.2-kilometre circular trail of the Rannametsa-Tolkuse Nature Trail. The route from the car park to the bog lake is also accessible by wheelchair and with a pushchair. At Pikla, shallow, varied coastal waters provide numerous waterbirds with favourable feeding and resting grounds. At Lemme Beach, the campsite offers 15 fire pits, dry toilets and covered areas with tables and benches.

Maritime History and Regional Culture

The Häädemeeste Museum presents the region’s cultural heritage. The exhibition covers sailing and fishing, as well as the history of the church, school and community life. Guided tours also focus on the traditions of fishing families, the history of sailing and local cultural history. Treimani is home to the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, completed in 1935 and designated a cultural monument of the Republic of Estonia. The Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Tahkuranna was built in 1872 from red brick without natural stone; its features include domed ceilings, panelled arches and ceiling paintings.

Travel Planning Information

Regional bus route 76 runs daily from Pärnu Bus Station to the entrance of Jõulumäe Tervisespordikeskus. For further local orientation, you can also choose Häädemeeste, Ikla and Nepste. This allows you to set your focus between the coastal trail, birdwatching, beaches, bog landscapes and regional history.
