Vesterø Havn on Læsø: Harbour, Beach and Maritime Experiences

Vesterø Havn is the ferry port of Læsøfærgen. Læsø’s Ø-Camino can begin and end here. If you would like to combine arriving on the island with exercise, this starting point offers a special perspective on Læsø.

Harbour Square and orientation on the island

Direct buses run from Harbour Square in Vesterø Havn to Byrum, 7 km away, and to Østerby Havn, 20 km away. On Læsø, Byrum and Østerby Havn can be reached by bus from Vesterø Havn; Byrum is closer, while Østerby Havn involves a considerably longer journey from the harbour. When choosing the next bus destination on Læsø, the distance from Vesterø Havn is a factor.

Shallow water at Vesterø Beach

The water at Vesterø Beach is shallow and warm, allowing small children to swim and play. This stretch of coast is therefore particularly appealing to families who want to combine their time at the beach with a manageable bathing area. Vesterø Beach complements the maritime harbour setting with a peaceful side of the town shaped by the water.

Snorkelling, diving and fishing by the piers

In Vesterø Havn, beginners and experienced snorkellers and divers can explore sandy seabeds, rocky reefs and seaweed forests around the piers. At the south pier, there is shallow water and easy access for snorkelling beginners and families with children. This gives both first glimpses beneath the water’s surface and more experienced exploration their own setting.

Vesterø Harbour Pier is a good starting point for fishing. Mackerel, flatfish, grey mullet and sea trout are caught at Vesterø Harbour Pier. Visitors can hire fishing rods and fishing nets at the small red houses called “Havet i Havnen” next to the ferry office in Vesterø Havn.

Wellness with views of the Kattegat

Læsø Kur offers spa treatments, salt baths, massages and wellness based on Læsø salt, clay and seaweed. Læsø Kur is located in the middle of Vesterø and at the same time on the edge of the Kattegat, with views of the dunes, beach and sea. The former Vesterø Harbour Church was converted into Læsø Kur in 2008. This brings together coastal scenery, wellness and a clearly recognisable part of the town’s history in one place.

Maritime history at the harbour

Vesterø Havn is Læsø’s first harbour and was built in 1872. The Vesterø Rescue Station was established in 1875. There has been a shipyard in Vesterø Havn since the end of the 19th century. Alongside its present-day coastal and water-based experiences, these historical traces give the harbour a maritime character shaped by several eras.

There are toilets in the service building at Vesterø Havn. Bicycles can be rented a few hundred metres from Vesterø Havn. Læsø Kur is within walking distance of the ferry.
