Randijaur – Lake Landscape, Nature and Sámi History
Randijaur looks out over Randijaure, a lake in Jokkmokk in Norrbotten County. The lake covers a total area of 5,092.76 hectares and has an average depth of 5.4 metres. Randi lies in a landscape of lakes and forests, where the Lilla Lule älv forms small and large interconnected lakes. Randijaur is also located along Kvikkjokksvägen.
Other places at the same higher level include Vuollerim, KÃ¥bdalis, Jokkmokk and Porjus.
Water Landscape
Randi’s water system includes visible waterways that carry water from Randijaure to Klubbuddssjön. A rock-fill regulating dam was built at the outlet from Randijaure to Purkijaure in Lulleketjeforsen. For most of the year, the regulating dam at Randijaure creates a riverbed between Randijaure and Purkijaure that falls dry. The bodies of water mentioned here mark different points within the same system: Randijaure, Purkijaure and Klubbuddssjön are connected by the waterways described above. This makes it possible to distinguish the lake, outlet, dam and riverbed as separate elements of the water landscape.
Nature
The Pietartievva nature reserve lies in the vicinity of Randijaur, about 18 kilometres west of Randijaur. The most suitable access route leads from the south along public road 805 through Randijaur towards Granudden. The reserve contains primeval-looking pine forest, plenty of dead pinewood and a productive aspen forest. There are no constructed paths or rest areas.
For your travel planning, you can consider the water landscape, the nature reserve, fishing and traces of culture as separate focal points alongside one another. The approximate distance, the road layout and the absence of constructed paths each provide their own orientation for assessing the natural surroundings.
Fishing
European perch are abundant in Randijaure, while vendace are rare. The applicable fishing regulations in Randijaure may vary depending on the season and body of water. If you would like to fish at Randijaure, you should contact the responsible fishing association, fishing district or municipality for information.
Culture and Technology
Randijaur has a settlement or storage pit. Nils Nilsson, one of the first settlers in Jokkmokk Municipality, was a Forest Sámi with roots in Torne lappmark. A meadow used for milking may have been located by a stream, which he began to cultivate in the 18th century. Between Randijaur and Tjåmåtis, along the road towards Kvikkjokk, there are fireplaces and sites where birch bark was harvested.
The unit at Randi power station was first commissioned on 3 September 1976. Information on the best time to visit, how to get there and the rules currently in force in the area is available for a possible visit to Randi power station.
For your travel planning, you can consider water, nature, fishing, culture and technology as separate focal points alongside one another.
