Coast, Archipelago and City History in Piteå

Piteå combines coastal landscape, city life and a location in the archipelago. This makes it possible to bring together maritime experiences, historic sites, museums and nature trails in one destination. The character of the town can be seen both by the water and in the city centre: the Park Promenade runs along the Strömsund Canal between Piteå’s northern and southern harbours. Badhusparken, Piteå’s largest park, is also located on the Strömsund Canal in the city centre.

Getting Your Bearings Between Harbour, Park and Archipelago

Those who want to get to know Piteå on foot first can use the Park Promenade, a clearly signposted route along the canal. Badhusparken is also home to the NPNP Demonstration Park, with winding paths and planted areas. During the summer months, flea markets, auctions and park evenings take place there. In this way, the park complements the maritime setting with a venue for events in the city centre.

The Piteå archipelago encompasses historic landscapes with ancient monuments and has distinctive flora. Boat tours with seal safaris and sightseeing cruises are available in the archipelago. The coastal landscape is therefore not merely present as a backdrop, but can also be experienced through excursions on the water and through the archipelago’s distinctive landscape and natural features.

Nature Experience on Fårön

Fårön is located near Piteå, about 4 kilometres from the centre. There are nature trails and picnic areas there. Wide wooden boardwalks are available for the first 300 metres of the nature trail and are suitable for wheelchair users, pushchairs and walking frames.

Church, Museums and Maritime Culture

Piteå Church is the oldest wooden church in Upper Norrland. Inside, there is a richly decorated Renaissance altarpiece from the 17th century. Guided tours of Piteå Church can be booked. This also makes it possible to experience the church as a guided exploration of the historic building and its furnishings.

The Piteå Museum is located in the former town hall at Rådhustorget in the city centre. It is a cultural history museum for the Piteå region and presents exhibitions on the present day and history. It also has collections of objects and photographs. The museum additionally organises guided city walks. The Piteå Boat Museum focuses on maritime history. On display are old wooden boats, boat engines and fishing equipment. Music and Local Food Culture

Studio Acusticum hosts concerts, performances, stand-up, dance and film screenings throughout the year. The studio is also home to the Acusticum organ, considered the largest concert hall organ in the Nordic region. In addition to museums, churches and water-based experiences, Piteå therefore offers a year-round cultural programme.

Pitepalt is part of the local food culture. The dish is considered Piteå’s national dish and plays a central role in local food culture. Those who want to explore the town through its regional specialities will therefore find a culinary point of reference alongside the landscape and history.

Getting to Piteå

Piteå does not have a railway station. Train travellers can travel via Luleå, Älvsbyn or Boden and continue from there by bus or taxi. Luleå Airport is about 50 kilometres from Piteå; from there, connections are available by bus, taxi or rental car.
