Discover Altersbruk through several distinct themes: the history of ironworking, trails through Alterdalen, and activities on the Alterälven and at AlterHedens. You can explore cultural history, nature and outdoor activities as different focal points of your trip. The historic traces, circular route, and offerings centred on Sámi bread and rhubarb each add their own perspective.

Industrial History in Altersbruk

Alters Bruk in Nybyn was founded at the boat landing at Alterlänningen, also known as Alterheden. At Lassbacken, a mill, several outbuildings and residential buildings from the operating period remain from Altersbruk. Iron was produced at Alters Bruk until 1890. The founding place, surviving buildings and end of production are three distinct reference points in the area’s history. If you are interested in industrial heritage, you can view them as different perspectives on Altersbruk: the site where it was founded, the physical traces of its operating period, and the end of iron production.

The present-day millpond in Nybyn is considered Norrbotten’s oldest millpond still in operation and has been operating since 1838. This brings two specific dates side by side: iron production ended by 1890, while the millpond has been operating since 1838. They refer to different aspects of the area’s history and offer a vivid contrast between iron production that has ended and a millpond that is still in operation.

At Bruksbadet by the old mill in Altersbruk, wheelchair users can move around easily both at the kiosk and on the pier. This practical information may be helpful when planning a visit.

Hiking, Nature and Paddling

The orange section of Solanderleden forms a circular route from Altersbruk through Alterdalen. The southern option is 15 kilometres long, and the northern option is 17 kilometres. The two-kilometre difference makes it easy to compare the route lengths. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The southern side passes through forests and farmland and crosses the Alterälven twice. This part of the loop therefore combines different landscapes with two river crossings.

Alterdalen is known for its diverse animal and bird life. For nature enthusiasts, this adds another dimension to the hiking and industrial history, offering a further perspective on the valley.

The Alterälven also offers paddling routes of varying difficulty. Water conditions vary by season, so when planning, consider both your preferred level of difficulty and the conditions at that time of year. Hiking and paddling offer different ways to experience the area: a circular route with two stated distances, or a river whose conditions change with the seasons.

Experiences with Rhubarb and Gáhkku

AlterHedens offers a demonstration of how to bake gáhkku, a traditional Sámi flatbread baked over embers. The demonstrations take place seasonally, so checking the current schedule can help with planning. For another rhubarb experience, AlterHedens offers a guided tractor-and-wagon safari through the forest to the rhubarb fields. At Rabarberbio, a newly filmed video is shown in a small screening room, taking visitors through AlterHedens Gårdsbutik & Rabarberi. The offerings differ in format: a seasonal baking demonstration, a guided ride to the rhubarb fields, and a film about the farm shop and Rabarberi.
