Korning: Nature Trail, River Landscape and Village History

Korning combines a 1.5 km walking trail with river landscapes and village history. For travellers planning their days around walks, nature and local history, different points of interest come together here close to a small village.

Nature Trail and River Landscape

The Korning Nature Trail is 1.5 km long, runs immediately southwest of Korning and is designated as a footpath. The nature trail begins at Korning Kro and follows a circular route through the area around the Gesager Ã…. Due to hunting, the Korning Nature Trail may be temporarily closed. Its designation as a footpath remains the decisive classification of the route, without presupposing permanent accessibility.

The area around Korning includes forests, fields and the Gesager Å, which runs north and west of Korning. Through erosion, the Å has cut into the moraine landscape, creating slopes 10 to 15 metres high. The Bygholm Å also runs in the vicinity of Korning, west of the village towards Klaks Mølle. By the river west of Korning there is a nature trail, shelters and a fire pit. The nature around Korning is used for walks, cycling and outdoor activities.

The history of the river is also part of the village landscape. From Sporet i Korning, the remains of the weir in the river south of the old bridge can be seen. This gives you an interest in both nature and culture that is not limited to a single route.

Village Environment and Regional History

Korning’s historic village environment lies around the church and the gently curving village road, Korning Gammelby. The area around Korning Church is designated as a cultural environment because of its connection with De Stærke Jyder. A memorial stone marks the former location of the smithy near Korning Church. Hans Nielsen Smed, one of the founders of De Stærke Jyder, had his roots in this smithy. Schooling in Korning can be traced back to around 1740.

Korning Kro also represents several historical phases of use. The present building at Korningvej 143 was erected in 1904, initially used as a meeting hall, later as a temperance hotel and, from 1968, as a kro. This forms part of a local history in which communal, social and hospitality functions can be seen successively, without this guaranteeing any present-day use.

The village pond in Korning was extensively renovated and revitalised as a meeting place and space for conversation for the village’s residents. During the renovation, the distinctive cultural environment around the village pond in Korning Gammelby was preserved. The Korning Local History Association organises excursions and themed days offering insights into the history of the region. In addition, the Borgerforening in Korning holds a village festival in week 23.

Waterways and Orientation

In the area around Korning, Horsens og Omegns Sportsfiskerforening holds fishing rights for several kilometres upstream from Korning Bridge to Lovbyvej, shortly before the river’s mouth into Bygholm Lake. Some sections lie along both banks, while others are on only one bank.

The nearest transport hub for journeys to or from Korning is Korning School. Bus route 220 connects Horsens and Tørring.
