Sabro: Hilly Landscape, Krolf and Local History
Accommodation in Sabro
Sabro lies on a hilltop 97 metres high, in generally hilly terrain. Tunnel and meltwater valleys, as well as other hilltops, are part of this landscape. The height refers to a specific point, while valleys and hilltops shape the terrain as a whole. Taking the natural surroundings and terrain into account when choosing a destination gives you a more accurate impression than the elevation figure alone.
Hilly landscape and connection to water
In the 2025 municipal plan, the Sabro area is one of the eleven designated water and nature parks in Aarhus Municipality. This planning designation adds to the topographic perspective: Sabro can be viewed both in terms of its hills and valleys and as part of the wider area designation as a water and nature park. These are different points of reference for travel planning: the specific location on the hilltop and the broader context of the water and nature park.
The 43-kilometre Lilleå Route is nearby. It follows the Lilleå from its headwaters to its confluence with the Gudenå and is not signposted. One of the two headwater streams lies between Sabro and Lading, below Borum Eshøj; the other is in the meadows between Sabro and Søften, northwest of Aarhus. The two headwater areas make the course of the river easy to locate, while the route itself describes a broader landscape. If you include it in your plans, take into account that it is not signposted.
Activities and club life
Sabro IF Krolf has courses on the green spaces beside the clubhouse “Hytten”, formerly the scout house. The social side of the activity includes meeting others and enjoying nature and fresh air. Krolf is therefore shaped not only by its courses, but also by a sense of community and time spent outdoors. For travellers interested in local recreational activities, this offers a different perspective on Sabro than a description of the landscape alone.
The Sabro Byfest takes place on the gravel playing fields at Sabro IF. Venue details may be updated for future editions, so check the location if you are planning to attend a particular Byfest. Gymnastics is also associated with the club: most Sabro IF gymnastics classes take place in the two gymnasiums at Sabro-Korsvejskolen, in the yellow and green halls. As class locations can change, check the current venue details for the class you are interested in.
Local history across different periods
Sabro Church was originally built around 1175, with a chancel and nave. The Sabro-Faarup Local History Collection was founded on 23 January 1979, in response to major changes in the local area connected with the construction of Sabro Korsvejskolen. Its founding links the history of the collection with the changes that accompanied the school’s construction.
Another historical reference point dates to around 1890, when the Aarhus–Viborg main road was rerouted south of Sabro and crossed the Randers–Skanderborg main road there. The village of Sabro Korsvej grew up at this crossroads. The three dates—the construction of the church around 1175, the emergence of Sabro Korsvej around 1890, and the founding of the collection in 1979—represent distinct themes: a religious building, the development of a roadside settlement, and local remembrance of change. This makes it possible to place Sabro’s history in clearly distinct periods.
