Løgten – Landscape, Mill and Church History

Landscape and Views around Kalø Vig

Løgten combines a distinctly shaped coastal landscape with traces of history. The town lies on an area that slopes steeply towards Kalø Vig. To the west and north of Løgten, a large terminal moraine arc stretches along Kalø Vig. From Løgten, there are wide views of fields, forests, small lakes in kettle holes, the sea, Mols Bjerge and, to the southeast, the large building complex of Studstrupværket. The surroundings therefore cannot be reduced to a single impression of the landscape: water, agriculturally shaped areas, geological formations and technical architecture all form part of the vista.

The Iron Age Trail and Skødstrup Church

For a route with an archaeological focus, the Iron Age Trail offers a clear thematic connection. The Iron Age Trail is open to everyone and can be used all year round. It begins at Skødstrup Church and leads through the landscape near Lauritshøj, where archaeological excavations uncovered traces of an Iron Age village with houses, a burial ground and a sacrificial bog. The route thus connects an ecclesiastical starting point with a section where the landscape and archaeological remains become a shared theme.

The nearby Skødstrup Church also brings together several historical periods. The nave and chancel were built in the Romanesque style from granite blocks. Bishop Kettel consecrated the church in 1180. The tower was built between 1450 and 1480 from red bricks; the porch was added in 1450 and was also built from red bricks. The ornamentation dates from around 1500. At the chancel gable of Skødstrup Church stands a bench with a view over Kaløvig Bay.

Gammel Løgten, the Mill and Siloetten

Gammel Løgten developed at the loading place of the Vosnæsgård estate on Kalø Vig. In 1853, several farms were consolidated under the name Ny Løgtengård west of Vosnæsgård. After the inn business was relocated there, a small settlement with a market square and a general store developed around the farm. The name Løgten derives from the lanterns that marked the loading place.

Siloetten is the most distinctive building in Løgten and was recognised by Aarhus Municipality as a particularly good and beautiful building. Siloetten uses a former silo complex in Løgten as a 36-metre-high residential tower with 21 apartments. Segalt Mill in Løgten was built in 1854 and is Denmark’s only surviving six-winged mill. It has an octagonal shape; the lower section is built of masonry, while the upper section is made of wood and clad with shingles.
