The Peene flows through the southern part of the municipality of Groß Polzin. Groß Polzin is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and is administered by the Züssow district office.

Nature

The Fuchsberg, a hill, is located in the vicinity of Groß Polzin. A seasonal passenger ferry crosses the Peene between Stolpmühl and Stolpe an der Peene.

Culture and Local History

Groß Polzin was first mentioned in 1172 under the name “Poluziz”. The name is of Slavic origin and means “piece of wood”. Historically, Groß Polzin developed as a village centred around a village green and an estate village; after the Second World War, it became a roadside village.

The municipality comprises seven localities, including Groß Polzin with a manor house, several other villages with manor houses, and Quilow with a moated castle. The vicinity of Groß Polzin is also home to Quilow Moated Castle, Quilow Village Church and St. Mary Magdalene Church in Schlatkow.

Geographical Location

Groß Polzin is located approximately 10 km northwest of Anklam and 14 km east of Gützkow. The B109 runs east of the municipality; the A20 can be reached via the Gützkow junction.
