Alt Tellin: Cycling Route, Dutch Windmill and Local History

Cycling and the Dutch Windmill in Alt Tellin

Route 2, “On Both Sides of the Tollense,” follows a scenic cycling route through Alt Tellin. The route is about 44 kilometers long, or about 47 kilometers with the detour. It is rated as moderately difficult. The difference between the basic route length and the detour can help you plan the distance you want to cover. As route conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

One of Alt Tellin’s attractions is the Dutch windmill. It continues to recall the town’s development into a farming and crafts village. So, alongside cycling, the focus is also on a specific link to local history: the mill points to Alt Tellin’s former character as a village shaped by agriculture and crafts.

Landscape and Water in the Municipality

For a broader perspective, it is worth looking at the municipality as a whole. The Tollense glacial valley is about 1,000 meters wide, runs from east to west, and divides the municipality of Alt Tellin. In Hohenbüssow, the village lies in the heart of the Tollense Valley Landscape Protection Area. The Buchholz Heights reach 96 meters at their highest point, where the view stretches far across the countryside.

The Tollense also offers its own opportunity for visitors: waterway travelers use it within the municipality. However, boat traffic is no longer possible there because of river regulation and the construction of weirs. If you are planning a water excursion, check local water conditions before departure.

History and Culture in the Municipality

Broock Manor Estate is located in the municipality and features a nearly fully preserved historic estate complex, including a manor house, stables, a riding hall, and a Lenné park. The estate is a monument of outstanding national cultural significance. The garden culture exhibition also includes a tour of Lenné Park. Information boards are located at historic stops; the tour is available in connection with events or by appointment. Exhibitions in the manor house are generally open during public events. Groups of ten or more can visit with advance notice and an appointment. Public events take place in the manor courtyard, in the riding hall, or beneath old trees in Lenné Park. Confirm dates and access before your visit.

Hohenbüssow also brings together several traces of history. From around 1825 to 1865, it was a spa town listed in the German spa directory. The community hall built in 1826 is still visible, as are the remains of the former bathhouse. In the historic church, the pulpit altar and the pastor’s and patron’s pews date from the mid-18th century.

Visiting and Accommodation

At Broock Manor Estate, the village shop has a café and beer garden. Offerings include homemade cakes, coffee specialties made with a steam engine, changing regional treats and tarte flambée, as well as regional specialties and Broock products.
