Memorial Site and Educational Centre
On 12 March 2005, the German War Graves Commission opened the international youth meeting and educational centre Golm in the fishing village of Kamminke. Its peace education programmes are aimed primarily at schools and international youth meetings. The centre offers its own programmes in German and Polish, with a German-Polish focus. For travellers interested in history and educational work, this is a distinct aspect of the village alongside its historic character and landscape.
On Golm, the German War Graves Commission commemorates the victims of the 1945 bombing raid every year on 12 March and on the National Day of Mourning. Since 1984, the statue “The Freezing Woman in a Soldier’s Coat”, created by Bansin sculptor Rudolf Leptien, has also stood there. The memorial days and statue reflect the culture of remembrance on Golm; they offer a different focus for a visit than the harbour, views and walking trail.
