Altwarp combines a distinctive harbor location with opportunities to enjoy nature and explore the town’s history. Altwarp Harbor is the northeasternmost harbor in the Federal Republic of Germany and a border harbor facing neighboring Poland. This gives you a choice of different interests when planning your trip: you can get to know the town from a maritime perspective, focus on a hike, or include the beach and the village’s history.
Harbor, ferry and nature park trail
Ferry services run between Altwarp and Nowe Warpno in Poland, and bicycles can be taken on board. If you would like to travel by bicycle, this is a practical consideration for planning your trip. No departure times or crossing duration are provided here; for your decision, the key point is that you can travel between the two places by bicycle as well.
Altwarp is the eastern starting and finishing point of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Nature Park Trail. The trail passes historic captains’ houses not far from the Altwarp inland dunes. If you would like to include longer hikes in your trip, this gives you a clear reference point for planning your routes: Altwarp is connected to the eastern start and end of the trail, while the captains’ houses and dunes are among the sights described along the route.
A guided hike through the Altwarp desert or inland dune landscape is led by a nature park ranger every Thursday at 1 p.m. from mid-May to mid-September. It lasts about two and a half hours. This set schedule is especially important if you would like to plan your days around a guided exploration of nature.
Dune landscape and village beach
The inland dune ridge immediately south of Altwarp is about 2 kilometers long and rises up to 16 meters above sea level. The inland dunes are home to a stable population of otters, a protected species under the Habitats Directive. This makes the natural setting here distinct from a visit to the beach in town: the dunes are about the landscape and wildlife, while the village beach offers time by the water in the village.
There is a playground and a volleyball court at the village beach in the center of Altwarp. If you would like to combine time at the beach with games or volleyball, you can do both here. Altwarp-Siedlung is also home to Waldstrand Altwarp-Siedlung. From the settlement, it can be reached via a forest path in about ten minutes. The Wacholdertal valley near Altwarp offers another landscape to explore: the first juniper bushes can be seen from the road shortly before Altwarp.
Local history and culture
The Dutch-style windmill on Mühlenberg was in operation until 1950. It provides a tangible link to the town’s history. The church also has distinctive features: it is a simple brick building with a Grüneberg organ and a suspended angel.
The Altwarp Local History Museum is on the first floor of the former schoolhouse at Sandweg 122. It is open from May to October on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment.
