Stubbendorf: Manor House History and the Recknitz Valley

The History of Stubbendorf Manor House

After the original manor house burned down around the turn of the century, today’s Stubbendorf Manor House was built in 1904 by Paul Korff for Hellmuth von Prollius and his wife Toni. The manor house in Stubbendorf near Tessin is one of the manor houses in Mecklenburg that Korff built anew or altered in design in 1903/04. Its architectural style is considered unusual for the region.

Earlier events also connect the place with notable names and dates. In 1820, Ernst Alban married Margarete Wendt, the daughter of a landowner, in Stubbendorf. In 1823, the first steam engine from Stubbendorf was installed at Karnatz’s oil mill in Rostock. The recorded history of the place thus extends from a wedding in Stubbendorf to a technological connection with Rostock.

The Seger couple discovered the manor house in a very dilapidated condition and restored it in accordance with heritage conservation requirements, with a focus on sustainability and authenticity. The 1904 construction and the later restoration are two distinct chapters in its architectural history.

The Park and Surrounding Municipality

Stubbendorf Manor House and the adjoining park are both included in the heritage register. The house stands in a listed park with ancient trees; the manor house also has a small wood with impressive beech trees. Together, the park, trees and building form a historic setting that broadens the view beyond the architecture of the house.

In the associated municipality, a wild apple tree in Apfelbaumallee is estimated to be around 400 to 500 years old. It has since split apart. If you plan to visit the tree specifically, check its current condition before your visit.

Ehmkendorf is a separate locality within the municipality. Its manor house was built around 1790 as the dairy farm of the Stubbendorf estate; the historic Ehmkendorf estate complex is also included in the heritage register in its entirety. The manor house in Ehmkendorf and today’s house in Stubbendorf thus represent markedly different building phases: around 1790 and 1904.

The Recknitz Valley in the Municipality

The Recknitz Valley, a glacial meltwater valley with great biodiversity, lies near Ehmkendorf. The valley is suitable for walks within the municipality; the region around the Recknitz Valley also offers opportunities for cycling and horse riding. The valley invites visitors to explore on foot, on horseback and on the water. A network of hiking trails leads from Zarnewanz to Ehmkendorf through the Recknitz Valley, providing a direct connection between these two places.
