Local History and Monuments

Rukieten was first mentioned in a document in 1306. Monuments at various addresses connect with this early local history: a memorial stone to the MTS stands at Am Ausbau 5–7. At Am Anger 3, a farmhouse is listed as a protected historic building; a war memorial commemorating 1914/18 also stands on Am Anger. These three distinct points of reference—a memorial stone, farmhouse and war memorial—provide tangible connections to local history. They link an early written mention with forms of remembrance and architecture, without suggesting that each tells the same story.

KunstOffen 2026 in Rukieten

At KunstOffen, from 23 to 25 May 2026, sculptor Arndt Weigend showed sculptures made of granite, marble, sandstone and various types of wood in his open studio in Rukieten. Drawings, prints of woodcuts and graphic art calendars featuring Ringelnatz poems were also on display. The exhibition at the time thus ranged from three-dimensional works in different materials to drawing and printmaking; the calendars also added a connection to poetry. For travelers interested in art, this program is a clearly dated part of Rukieten’s local history.

Getting There by Road and Motorway

Rukieten is connected to the regional road network via the L 142. The Laage junction on the BAB 19 between Rostock and Berlin is about 20 km from Rukieten. The Bad Doberan junction on the BAB 20 is about 13 km away; this connection has been in place since 2000. Based on these distances, Bad Doberan is closer than Laage. Both figures are approximate distances, not journey times.

With its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests, Sternberger Seenland Nature Park is geared primarily toward hiking and cycling. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park independently or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. These are different ways to experience nature: on the trails in the nature park or on an independent or guided visit to the wildlife park.

For active pursuits, Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. Its 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zip line runs directly over the lake. The Wolhynian Resettlers Museum in Linstow offers another way to explore regional history: tours use ethnographic objects, photographs and documents to tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The museum offers tours for groups and individuals.

Coastal and railway heritage also form part of the wider Rostock destination. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan. With its 900 mm gauge, it has shaped the towns along the Baltic coast since 1886 and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. In the regional context, nature, active pursuits, museum history and the coastal railway thus offer clearly distinct travel interests alongside Rukieten’s local history.
