Neu Kosenow’s cultural and historical highlights are its church architecture and village history. Medieval fieldstone churches, a decorative painting from 1904, and the history of Kagendorf each add a distinctive touch.
Churches and Chapels Through the Ages
The Church of St. Mary in Alt Kosenow features an exceptionally rare, complete decorative painting with Art Nouveau elements from 1904, created by Otto Bartelt from Berlin. By contrast, the Church of St. Peter in Kagendorf stands out for its architectural form: it is an elongated fieldstone building from the 13th century, constructed in several phases. The two churches are therefore quite distinct: in Alt Kosenow, the rare interior painting defines the church’s appearance, while in Kagendorf, it is the elongated shape and multi-phase building history.
Auerose Church is a plastered fieldstone building from the 15th century; its western half-timbered tower dates from 1724. The von Borken family mausoleum was built east of the church in 1898 as a cemetery chapel. It was built over an existing family crypt, which can still be entered. Auerose thus brings church architecture together with a building that has its own cemetery and family history.
Dargibell Chapel is a rectangular fieldstone building from the 15th century that was altered in the Baroque period. It collapsed in 1941 and was rebuilt after 1960. Its history thus connects its earlier origins with later alterations and reconstruction after the collapse.
Village History and Cycling Plans
Kagendorf became a museum village in the mid-1990s. The decision was prompted by its unbuilt village green, day laborers’ cottages, and large farms along a historic cobblestone street. This part of the village’s history shifts the focus from individual churches to the village structure: the village green, cottages, and farms form the setting described here.
For cyclists, a particular stretch along federal highway 109 is also relevant. On April 24, 2024, work began to renew an almost 3.3-kilometer section of cycle path from the edge of Ducherow to the Dorfstraße intersection in Neu Kosenow. If you plan to include this section in a tour, check its current condition before setting out.
Vorpommern-Greifswald in a Broader Context
Three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. This adds a distinct perspective on nature and outdoor activities at the district level to Neu Kosenow’s cultural and historical focus.
Regional cycling routes also offer a broader scale for planning: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The Stettiner Haff Loop and the Route of North German Romanticism are also regional cycling routes for exploring the district. The Ueckermünde Heath offers hiking and horseback riding as well as cycling; the three regional cycling routes are for exploring the district by bike.
