The Manor House and Its Historical Context

The castle-like manor house was built between 1741 and 1745 by master builder Christoph Julius Löwe. It is a Baroque stuccoed building with a gabled roof. “Stuccoed building” describes its plastered exterior; a gabled roof can be recognized by its two sloping roof planes. The construction dates, builder and architectural style provide specific reference points for local history.

Another historical turning point came in 1785: in connection with an exchange of the estate for the Staven state-owned estate, Sponholz itself became a state-owned estate. The two dates refer to different events: one marks the construction of the manor house, the other the later change in status. This allows local history to be viewed through both the building and the development of the estate.

The Threshing Festival and Rural Tradition

The Sponholz municipal threshing festival takes place every year. It gives a large number of visitors access to rural traditions, especially historical working methods. Those interested in the history of work will find a different perspective here than at the manor house: the focus is on traditional techniques and rural customs. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event date in advance.

Rühlower Os and Its Landscape

Rühlower Os lies in the Rühlow district of the municipality of Sponholz. It is about one kilometre long and is among the smallest eskers in the Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape Geopark. Numerous dry grassland species, as well as trees and shrubs, have taken root on the sands deposited in a dam-like formation during the last Ice Age. Regular maintenance and sheep grazing help preserve these species. The northern section contains the Osauge, a hollow resembling an amphitheatre. The landscape thus combines a geological landform with distinctive dry grassland and its ongoing management.

One restriction is important when planning a visit: there are no public paths in the Rühlower Os nature reserve. Do not plan to use public paths through the area. Its geological features and the management of the dry grassland describe the character of the landscape, but do not mean that there is a freely accessible hiking route.

The wider Mecklenburg Lake District offers another perspective on nature, distinct from Rühlower Os in the municipality of Sponholz.
