Village Church and History
Lohmen village church is a medieval fieldstone building. Its main structure, with two bays and a narrower, single-bay chancel, was built at the end of the 13th century. A north sacristy and a narrower tower were added later. The building’s architectural features give it its distinctive structure, while the wall paintings provide a special art-historical accent.
The interior, completely covered in paintings, continues to attract visitors today. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the wall paintings are considered unique both for their imagery and their execution, and are of great art-historical significance. The region’s history in the 20th century also has a place in the town: the Lohmen Village Museum presents it in a granary that became a museum in 2006. The settlement of the area now belonging to the municipality goes back much further. It was inhabited at least 5,000 years ago, as indicated by megalithic tombs and burial mounds in the surrounding area. Near Lohmen is a larger burial ground with at least ten Bronze Age burial mounds.
Forests, Lakes and Hiking Trails
The “Seeblick” recreational forest is intended for play, learning, exercise and experiencing nature. Around 3.3 hectares of municipal forest are legally designated as recreational forest. This describes a forest with several intended uses: experiencing nature goes hand in hand with exercise and learning, while play is also part of the concept.
Another forest project is the children’s health forest in Lohmen. It opened on April 25, 2025, and is designed as a pilot project. Its aims include promoting health, nature-based education and environmental protection. Lohmen’s nature-based recreational activities also include hiking and fishing. The lakes in Lohmen invite visitors to swim in summer.
For visitors also interested in early settlement, the Sternberger Seenland Nature Park lists archaeological hiking trails in Lohmen and Kritzow among its attractions.
Village Festivals and Getting Around
The village festival is held every year and makes use of both the village square and the festival barn. The Mecklenburger Sheep-Shearing Festival also takes place at these two locations. Lohmen also hosts a traditional European Christmas market, which likewise makes use of the village square and festival barn.
The Lohmen Tourist Information Office is located in the festival barn in the village center. Visitors can get tips there for their stay in the region.
