Kuhs on the B103
The B103 is a defining feature of Kuhs as a linear village. The Landhotel & Airporthotel Kuhs is also located on the B103. The road is therefore a useful point of reference when getting your bearings in the village and locating the hotel. Food is served at the Landhotel in Kuhs.
Early settlement history
The history of Kuhs dates back to before its first documentary mention in 1286. A Slavic settlement called “Cuziz” already existed here before then. The year 1286 therefore marks the first documentary mention, not the beginning of the settlement. If you are interested in how a place developed, you can use this distinction as a starting point: Kuhs was already inhabited before it was first mentioned in written records.
Listed houses and memorial sites
There are two listed buildings in Kuhs: a smallholder’s house at Dorfteich 38 and a hall house at Storchennest 23. Their different names and addresses make it easy to distinguish between the two buildings. Both form part of the village’s architectural history and each offers a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in rural architecture and heritage conservation.
Another testament to the village’s history is the memorial to the soldiers of Kuhs who fell in the First World War. It consists of two glacial erratics and stands on the extensive grounds of the Landhotel Kuhs. The municipality also has a memorial stone in Zehlendorf commemorating those who fell in the First World War. The two memorial sites are thus associated with their respective places: the memorial to the fallen soldiers of Kuhs is in Kuhs, and the memorial stone is in Zehlendorf.
Zehlendorf Moor in the surrounding area
Zehlendorf Moor lies in the Augraben lowlands between the Recknitz and Zehlendorf. When finding your way around, it is important to distinguish between viewing the moor and accessing it: the moor itself is not accessible, but the Zehlendorfer Damm offers views of it. The two sections are separated by a public path.
Zehlendorf also has historical significance. The village originated as a Slavic settlement called “Zely”; the name means “herb.” Zehlendorf is also home to a riding stable. Together with the memorial stone there, these offer different points of interest for learning about the municipality: settlement history, a riding stable and commemorative culture. These topics concern Zehlendorf and complement the history of Kuhs without conflating the two places.
