Geographical Location
Dolgen am See is located between Laage and Schwaan, around 20 kilometres from Rostock. The settlements are grouped around Lake Dolgen, which is considered to be three kilometres long and 300 metres wide.
In the vicinity of Dolgen am See are Peperbarg, Kahler Berg and Dolger Berg. The area is hilly and reaches 71 metres above sea level at the latter, Dolger Berg; near Friedrichshof, the municipality borders Lake Hohensprenzer.
History
Dolgen was first mentioned in official records in 1285. Later, the village became associated with the Convent of the Holy Cross and with manor estates, including Dolgen Manor House.

The wider regional surroundings of Dolgen am See include Dornbusch, Güstrow Castle, Bützow Castle, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Wildlife Park and the Thünen Museum.
Activities
The Schwaan–Pölchow section of the Berlin–Copenhagen cycle route is considered a route through meadows and fields away from traffic. Hiking and mountain biking trails are also considered to be available around Dolgen am See.
