St. Nicholas Village Church and its construction phases
The rectangular fieldstone choir of St. Nicholas Village Church was consecrated in 1288. In the 14th century, the church was extended with a slightly wider, single-nave hall made of red bricks. The west tower, added to the western side, was built of yellow bricks in 1913/14. The sequence of construction therefore spans several centuries, from the medieval choir through the nave to the tower.
A medieval painted decoration has been preserved on the surfaces of the cross-ribbed vault in the choir. The terminology also helps put the building in context: a single-nave hall is a church space with one nave; the surfaces are the sections of the vault between the ribs. This makes it possible to consider the building’s form, materials and preserved features as different aspects of the same church.
Local history, manor house and cycling tour
The local history room complements the church’s architectural history with local history and can be visited by appointment. Its exhibits include chronicles of former schools and village chronicles of Boddin, Alt Vorwerk and Groß Lunow. If you would like to visit the local history room, arrange your visit in advance.
Boddin Manor House was built in 1840 and has a small park. Compared with the medieval village church, the manor house points to a different period in the town’s history. A former manor house is now used as a kindergarten, municipal administration office and youth club.
Boddin can serve as a possible starting point for the “In the footsteps of the windmills” cycling tour. There is ample parking in front of the former manor house. Check the parking arrangements again before your trip. In the surrounding area, fields, meadows, forests and small ponds offer opportunities for peace and relaxation. The children’s festival, one of the annual highlights of the municipality of Boddin, offers another glimpse into community life. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
Culture in the wider destination of Walkendorf
The wider destination of Walkendorf is home to the Richard Wossidlo House, a museum dedicated to the folklorist Richard Wossidlo. The museum is located in a rural laborer’s cottage built around 1875. Wossidlo was born in Friedrichshof, a district of the municipality of Walkendorf, and baptized in the local church. The museum, the person and the building each offer their own points of interest for anyone interested in cultural history.
Also in Walkendorf is the Alte Ausspanne, a listed, lovingly restored half-timbered house with a thatched roof. The house has a 4,600-square-meter meadow garden with benches, sunbathing areas, a spiral herb garden and a pond. In summer, the Alte Ausspanne café is nestled in the shade of an old lime tree behind the building. The Alte Ausspanne also has an extendable meeting room, the “Sommergalerie,” which hosts special exhibitions of art and culture. Visitors can also take part in creative courses there; check the specific course dates in advance.
