Architectural history in Sanitz
Sanitz Village Church was built in the 13th century. Its appearance combines a massive fieldstone structure with a half-timbered tower. Inside is an altar featuring paintings by Rudolph Suhrlandt dating from around 1800. The church thus brings together medieval architectural forms and artistic decoration from a considerably later period. For culture enthusiasts, both its distinctive construction and the altar paintings are defining features.
The Old Forge is another historic building. This late-Baroque oak half-timbered building was first mentioned in official records in 1798. The grounds of the Old Forge are protected as a historic monument. As the building is on private property, it cannot be viewed up close. This is important when planning your trip: the forge can be appreciated as part of the local architectural heritage, but it is not a destination for an on-site visit.
Explore by bike or on foot
The 36-kilometre circular route from Sanitz starts at Sanitz railway station and passes through Wendfeld, Reppelin, Wendorf, Neu-Wendorf, Stormsdorf, Zarnewanz, Tessin and Horst before returning to Sanitz. These places give the route a clear itinerary, while its length helps you fit the circular ride into your day’s plans. On foot, the Kleine Waldrunde Sanitz hiking trail leads north from the old village through a forest and along sandy clearings. Manor house, community centre and regional produce
The manor house at Schloss Groß Lüsewitz adds another distinctive historical touch. It was built between 1896 and 1898 in the Neo-Renaissance style. A landscaped park adjoins the manor house and was extended after 1970 to include a riding competition ground. The manor house has been privately owned since 2013 and opens for certain events, such as Monument Day in September.
The Sanitz Local History Room is part of the Sanitz Community Centre. The Sanitz farm shop is also one of the local places to visit: it offers a wide range of fresh regional produce.
