Mönchhagen is located on the eastern edge of Rostock in a predominantly flat landscape that drains toward the Breitling via the Peezer Bach. The Baltic Sea coast at Markgrafenheide Beach is about ten kilometers away. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Mönchhagen is officially recognized as a tourist destination.

In 1252, Mönchhagen was mentioned in connection with the sale of the Rostock Heath. The history of the settlement thus dates back to the Middle Ages.
